Slow leak on one side of range rover sport

Hi Everyone,

I have recently bought a Range Rover sport supercharged 2006 53000miles
the problem is overnight the passenger side drops down eventually after 2/3 days it goes down
to the bump stops, my mechanic has tested for leaks all over with leak detector but nothing has shown
the only part he cannot test is the airbag section that has the sheath around it in any case the airbags look ok.

I have read somewhere that's valves may not seat properly or rings could be worn after a little research and having a think myself im swaying towards thinking that the valve which controls the release of air on the passenger side maybe the one at fault and not seating but the problem is where is the valve located on the cross over valve or the actual valve block my mechanic is stumped and doesn't seem sure so I'm now booked in with someone else to carry out investigation

Has anyone had a similar problem ?
Any ideas how to confirm it is a valve ?
if it is the air block or cross over valve does anyone do refurbs ?

Hope someone can help also it has been linked up to the laptop and no faults are showing

First thing is to remove the air suspension controller fuse having ensured the vehicle is sat at the correct height. It's number 26 in the fuse box next to the battery. It's a 20A fuse.

Then leave the vehicle over night. This makes sure it's not the controller or a sensor causing the issue. The control module wakes up periodically and levels the vehicle - a spurious reading from a height sensor can cause it to level that corner downwards. If no movement occurs with the fuse removed then look at the height sensor on the affected corner. They're reasonably cheap to replace. A suspension height calibration is required if the height sensor is changed.

If it is a leak of some form, it's more likely to be a faulty valve in the relevant valve block. These can be repaired or for about £100 you can buy a new one. Leaking air bags are quite rare compared to leaks elsewhere. The valve might leak because it's damaged , worn or might have some dirt in it. It's possible for some of the material used in the air compressor's dryer to find its way in to the system I understand. This would allow a small leak from a valve. If the valve block is replaced a height calibration is not required.

There are three valve blocks. The front one is behind the bumber on the driver's side (RHD). The rear one is on the left rear suspension tower and the central one is by the compressor. The front and rear blocks contain a valve for each corner and the cross link valve (three valves per block). The centre block diverts air to the reservoir and the front and rear blocks. The front and rear blocks look the same but they are specific to each end so make sure you get the correct block if you replace one. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to reply, sounds like some good advice I will try the fuse trick over the weekend and if not that pass your advice onto my mechanic and he will try and source the valve in question.

I also read that a failing compressor may release dissident into the system which would also confirm what your saying as the previous owner recently replaced the compressor which could have contributed to gunk inside air block and the valve not seating correctly.

I shall keep you updated she not booked in now for a couple of weeks as mechanic is busy

Thanks again Jamie

Hi RRSTDV8

My RRS is currently in the garage I called for an update earlier and he said he was having trouble locating the leak so we had suggested maybe getting to the front cross link valve to check that out, he was saying there is 3 valves within the cross link valve which doesn't make sense as I thought the valve was contained within the front airblock you mention ? I'm not sure he has checked this front airblock your talking about or if it a slightly different system on the supercharged can you clarify this and I could maybe update my mechanic ?

once again thank you

The front and rear valve blocks do indeed each contain 3 valves. One corner valve for each airbag and a crossover valve that allows air to move between airbags on the same axle. The systems uses the individual valves to raise or lower the individual corner. It uses the crossover valve to allow air to move across the axle to improve articulation off road and comfort on road at low speeds.

Here is what the valve block looks like:

thank you RRSTDV8, currently on order is the rear crossover valve and a rear sensor.... since my mechanic has had it he cleaned out both front and rear valves gave a little tighten on a hose after that he gave me it back I parked it and 5 hours later the passenger side had dropped leaving it all lope sided so I then started it up it leveled switched off then pulled the fuse that you told me after a day the whole rear of the vehicle dropped about 40mm whilst the front didn't budge, this made no sense as before mechanic had it it was a front issue but maybe he sorted that with what he done.

with the new symptoms we agreed on the rear valve block and a rear sensor as when it was hooked upto the laptop one of the rear sensors wasn't showing a very smooth graph.

if these parts fail not sure what next to change, will keep you updated

Cheers J

Update - Mechanic has changed rear air block (crossover link) he also changed rear sensor and so far it's sat perfect not budged after 24 hours parked up and also after using and parking on different terrain so looks like it was the rear valve after all, thank goodness it was the cheaper part thank you for your advice on this one Smile only one last job to do pre-sale and that's the anti roll bar bushes.
