And just how many years have we (owners) known about this issue.

Is what we call "customer responsive" ? Just goes to show that until the problem blows up in their face they (JLR) will take the least cost option.

Other issues we know just roll on...
- left-hand turbos on the V8 diesels die,
- 2.7 diesel crankshafts fail without warning and without regard to mileage (JLR at least support about 80% of costs even out of warranty,
- anti-roll bars and bushes
- ball-joints
- alternators, batteries
- tailgate switches.

I here JLR is now going to build their own newly designed engines in their own new plant - more volunteers (suckers) required for product testing I feel

Way hey, about time something was done about this. Banging Head I hope this wakes JLR up to smell the coffee Mr. Green JLR 's answer to this problem all along is.... Our vehicles meet Thatcham approved security test so go whistle... Whistle I really hope this kicks JLR where it really hurts, because this news will be spread worldwide. Too many people have suffered the loss of their new expensive motors because of JLR's negligence imo. Whistle

This is not a new story, it's been happening for months or years and Land Rover has assumed the shameful position of denying there's a problem in the first place and then washing their hands of responsibility when a car is stolen.

There is an inevitable compromise between security and convenience. Your key ends up in the washing machine. You want a replacement cut. You want it now, fine if the person cutting the key is legitimate but providing the means to do it in the car opens the door to the car being stolen if they are not. The other extreme - making the key and drive authentication module a closed, inaccessible sub-system which has to be replaced in its entirety at great expense would not be welcome.

There are two key issues. First, it is madness to keep the codes required to cut a new key in the car itself, however well you try to protect them. Secondly, because car electronics is like a local area network with a large number of computers talking to each other, another computer can join the party and pretend to be something it isn't. As soon as you provide a messaging interface on the network, the system becomes vulnerable to attack.

At the moment, once you are in the car and connected to the on-board diagnostic socket, there is nothing to prevent you downloading the key codes. My view is that there needs to be an authentication step which involves the owner of the car approving the creation of a new key. Give the owner a chip and pin card and reader; the car issues an 8 digit challenge code, the reader provides a PIN verified 8 digit response code to authenticate. Invalid response code, no key, not even for Land Rover.

Of course, it's more complex than that because the system doing the authentication is in the car and itself vulnerable to attack. However, encryption is your friend including using electronics which is offline from the network.

In the meantime, my Evoque is protected because I've disconnected the CAN-bus line from the diagnostics socket; someone determined to steal the car might be prepared to spend the time working out why nothing happens when they connect their laptop but they will probably just give up and try another car.

Physical security - like a steering wheel lock - will also be a deterrent but until Land Rover sort this out, they will be a laughing stock. No point saying either, "other manufacturers are affected", it's a picture of a Land Rover which the BBC chose to put on their web-site.

That old adage, "no publicity is bad publicity" might just not apply in the case.

If LR are not working full time on this, they should be. Mark

Cannot believe it has come to this but living in London and parked on the street I think I may get a steering lock.

Anyone got any suggestions. Was looking at the Stoplock HG 134-66 Stoplock Airbag 4x4 Steering Wheel Lock which says it works for larger vehicles - not that the RRS steering wheel strikes me as particularly large 2010 997 Carrera S

Sammyf, I was about to ask the same. Any views on Steering Lock or Wheel Clamp type lock? Mine arrives in early January and will be parked in a secure garage and I think a Wheel Clamp type lock might be a better and immediate visual deterrent.

With regards to the publicity that this subject is getting in the media, it has also made national radio. BBC 5 Live are about to report on it shortly.

What's wrong with a mechanical door key and lock on separate circuit to steering lock. A thief may gain access to the network and CAN bus but they will damage the door and steering etc. which will all take time which is the last thing they want.

It will not stop the determined team but it might be a sufficient deterrent.
