Can anyone with experience in soldering give advice?

So, I'm truly exhausted having searched everywhere for a set of angel eyes with 5 led's per ring. I've even contacted China, but got fed up when they started sending me offers to buy all sorts of lights, teddy bears, you name it Sheep

Sparky, I love you but I hate you Mr. Green

Yesterday I was on ebay looking to buy the LED's, to make up my own angel eyes. I found the following:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161232054686

Question is, can any electrician here tell me:
1) what material should I be using for the ring, and possibly where to source them ?
2) my dad has a soldering iron so that's sorted (and solder). (this isn't a question by the way)
3) what size resistor do I need per ring, considering I want 5 led's per ring? The advert states "Voltage: max. 3,2 V".
4) what else, what haven't I considered? I've got a steady had (aka "Cool Hand Luke")

If I get this going I can offer to make a few for other forum members!

The picture I'm uploading is from Sparky's thread, to refresh some memories Thumbs Up

 Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

My angel eyes failed a while ago and I searched everywhere for the new style ones.

One of the eBay sellers was thinking about selling my the LEDs but never did.

I decided against the hassle of them failing again so painted all the backs black, removal of the old set pulled off all the chrome.

The rings would just need to be plastic and glue the LEDs onto them.

that's a pain, though I've heard that the diodes sensitive to burning. Maybe buying them from a German supplier will make a difference, we'll see.

so, plastic ring sounds like a good plan. Simple to find acrylic sheets on ebay in various colors.

I've heard about gluing them in place first, to stop them moving around. good that you mentioned that Thumbs Up

question then is, the soldering. How do I create a connection between each led? How many resistors? Only one, or one between each diode?

Diagram from anyone knowledgeable would be great. Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

Oh my god, Sh**ts just got real when the mans trying to make his own DRL's Bow down Bow down

For what its worth luke if you hadn't guessed by the name "sparky" I'm actually an electrician & I wouldn't dream of taking on such a task.........if you pull this off then your a better man than me Thumbs Up

I know how much this means to you so I've just text the fella again to see if I can get him to sell me a smaller quantity, I'll let you know what he says. I'll also reply to the PM's I keep getting off people on here asking for them and see if there is enough interest to get an order together, from memory I think it was minimum order of 100 which is 25 sets so will need quite a bit of interest for it to be possible unless he agrees to a smaller order.

have you looked at the following site http://www.auto-lighting.co.uk/

they keep a fair range of DRL's etc and also angel eyes / rings, not sure if they are exactly what you are looking for but it may save you some hassle. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!

Just looked at the LED's in your link and they are the right ones.........maybe it could be possible

If its any help this is a close up of the rings, there appears to be a chip of some sort on the rear

"Sparky" well yes now it all makes sense Rolling Eyes

I was in a DIY store today and the guy at the counter told me it should be a simple job. And I'm thinking to myself, if ebay is selling these rings for a fiver a pair, what could be so difficult? Although of course they do work for 10pence an hour Crying or Very sad (not the guys in the DIY store, but the Chinese workers)

But if your contact can re-supply, that would be best! I have enough on my plate. But if he can't then do you think you could work out the best way to solder them in place. With my looks and your brain, we could go a long way Mr. Green Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

Maybe it's a small resistor on each diode? or a clump of solder? they look very well made, that's for sure! Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

Yeah a resistor of some sort, its got "IDE" printed on it

I know this isn't much help but I've just gone through 7 pages of PM's looking for a fella who had a set off me but never got round to fitting them as he swapped his sport for a Vogue and asked me if I wanted them back (at the time I didn't), but cant for the life of me remember his name.

Sure he was Scottish and sold his sport for a grey Overfinch Vogue, if your reading this LUKE WANTS TO BUY YOUR DRL'S..........get in touch Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

if you are still hell bent on making your own rings, you will need to know 3 things in order to calculate the size of resistor needed to lower the voltage to the correct level :

supply voltage ( 12v )
forward voltage of the LED ( 3.2v i think you said )
forward current of the LED ( i'm guessing at 20ma ) but this should be advertised with the LED, different colours, different currents

visit this site http://ledcalc.com/

input your information and it will work it out for you.... and even give you a small layout drawing Thumbs Up 2010 RRS, TDV8

thanks for that gogsy! Worked very nicely indeed, although I had to adjust the forward voltage to 2.3 from 3.2 in a series circuit, or the total voltage would have been more than 12v. I don't know if that makes any difference making this change. i'm sure the resulting light will be very bright indeed.

the diagram was very useful Thumbs Up Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.

TL, its good practice to get the voltage as close as is required for the LED's as it will affect the brightness, but more importantly, it will reduce the life of the LED especially if it is too high. 2010 RRS, TDV8

will it make any difference then if i connect them in parallel, with each diode having its own resistor? this is getting complicated. will the led's then be brighter, or doesn't it make any difference? Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.
