Try tapping tow bar with a hammer to loosen it and/or maybe some wd40 in the socket - they can stick if left on - I always remove mine now after leaving overnight once and having exactly this problem Embarassed Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Check if the locking pin from spare wheel side is sliding to unlock-lock positions If yes, it means that tow bar is rusted to its slot.

Actually there're 3 main reasons not to detach the tow bar.

1. key doesn't get in or doesn't turn unlock but locking pin from spare wheel side slides half way to release position. no problem with locking pin. patience, wd40, compressed air gun with 10bar, needle and you're done.
2. no problem with key but locking pin from spare wheel side doesn't slide - rusted pin to the tow bar where it sits. wd40 for couple days sprayed from spare wheel side each day for 3-4 times may solve it but this is the biggest problem I ever had with tow bar. car was on lift, spare wheel removed, lock unlocked and twisted as required and other person was hammering locking pin from spare wheel side.
3. no problem with key lock, no problem with sliding locking pin but tow bar rusted it self to its slot, couple hit with bigger hammer and it's solved

it's the pin that's labelled locking pin in the picture above.

Sometimes if it's in "lock" the whole mechanism is in the wrong mode.

Worth a shot, but re-reading your post I'm not sure that's your problem.. Is it the locking barrel that will not pull out? RRS gone

hmm that looks pretty unhappy!

I'd have expected the locking pin to be out, due to the fact there is no locking barrel in place to hold it in!

Sorry, got me stumped on that one. RRS gone

I had the same problem before. I drilled the hole 6mm opposite to stuck pin hole and used hummer to push pin out. When pin was free the hole was welded, then grind till it looks like was before. Sanded the whole tow bar, painted matte black, new green lock and it lookes like new Very Happy

EDIT: Used hummer with other ~5-6 mm pin to push locking pin out

see pic, when you drill the hole you can push pin out so it's 180deg to the pin working direction
