Intermittent transmission fault

Hi all (again),

I've got a random transmission fault coming up that actually doesn't seem to mean anything at all...

Example 1: I was reversing out of the drive, change to 'D', engine revved but no forward movement then off we go slightly faster than expected. On turning engine off there was a ping from the dash and "transmission fault". On restarting the engine there was no fault.

Example 2: Stationary at an uphill roundabout, I flicked the transmission into M/S and dropped to 1st. Just as I moved off sharpish, the dash went ping and "transmission fault" appeared but the gears changed up automatically exactly as I would expect them to as if nothing was wrong BUT trying to change up/down manually wouldn't work (the gear number '1' disappeared from the dash after the 'ping').

I've checked the battery and alternator and that looks good.

What else can cause this? I've gleaned from other posts it could be either a blown bulb or dodgy brake pedal switch but what else should I add to my check list? Would outside temperature be a factor?

Ta.

Quick update:

Just done nearly the same route with no problems. Could temperature be causing this - affecting a sensor or something? It was 3oC this morning when I had the messages. Now it's 11oC and the engine is at roughly the same temperature (needle just off 'cold')

I hate unknown issues!
