Jumped in the RRS this morning and started and there was a rattle in the back. Drove off and then noticed the tailgate open message was on the display. I arrived at the shops car park and closed the upper tailgate and locked the car.

Hopefully someone else can clarify this but sure I read on here that corroded tailgate switch caused this issue - might be a worth doing a search

You don't say which MY you have but if it is pre 2010.......have you perhaps accidentally programmed the third button on the fob to open the upper tailgate? If so, it is quite easy to press the third button as you start the car (done it myself). 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks - I will look into it. So are we talking the sensor that tells the system if the door is open or closed or the mechanism that actually locks and unlocks the door - also if it is corrosion I do not understand why the issue dows not show up until after the engine is started and not when power is first applied to the system via the ignition switch. But something to look at thanks. Garry 07MY RRS TDV6 Arctic Frost Aspen Interior |

Thanks - thought that as well as the key I was using does open the tailgate but my spare key turns the lights on and the issue happens with both keys. Cheers Garry 07MY RRS TDV6 Arctic Frost Aspen Interior |

From reading others comments I believe it is the switch under the rubber that you press to release the top tailgate Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have had a good look at this today - the actual switch seems OK and even with the switch disconnected the actual lock disconnects up to 60 secs after engine start. There is an electrical pulse coming through the system unlocking the upper tailgate.

Any one with any ideas other than the switch - I checked it today and there is no corrosion inside it (as said when disconnected the issue is still there). The thinking is that maybe there is an intermittent short in the cables that go to the switch - maybe a fault in the Body Control Unit.
