Upper Tailgate Unlocking on Start

Jumped in the RRS this morning and started and there was a rattle in the back. Drove off and then noticed the tailgate open message was on the display. I arrived at the shops car park and closed the upper tailgate and locked the car.

On coming back to the car and on starting I heard the upper tailgate unlock and then the message appeared. On testing, the upper tailgate is unlocking by itself just after the engine fires - not when the ignition is turned on and not when the starter is engaged but just as the engine fires.

Any clues on what might be causing this - it is only the top tailgate that unlocks and sometimes you can hear the servo trying to lock the tailgate without success.

I suppose like all things on these vehicles every function is unnecessarily controlled by a computer - I will try a hard reset when the rain stops but am interested to hear if anyone else has had similar issues.

I have tried my spare key and the same happens.

Thanks

Hopefully someone else can clarify this but sure I read on here that corroded tailgate switch caused this issue - might be a worth doing a search Confused

You don't say which MY you have but if it is pre 2010.......have you perhaps accidentally programmed the third button on the fob to open the upper tailgate? If so, it is quite easy to press the third button as you start the car (done it myself). 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks - I will look into it. So are we talking the sensor that tells the system if the door is open or closed or the mechanism that actually locks and unlocks the door - also if it is corrosion I do not understand why the issue dows not show up until after the engine is started and not when power is first applied to the system via the ignition switch.

But something to look at thanks.

Thanks - thought that as well as the key I was using does open the tailgate but my spare key turns the lights on and the issue happens with both keys.

Cheers

From reading others comments I believe it is the switch under the rubber that you press to release the top tailgate Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have had a good look at this today - the actual switch seems OK and even with the switch disconnected the actual lock disconnects up to 60 secs after engine start. There is an electrical pulse coming through the system unlocking the upper tailgate.

I removed the actual lock and removed the little electric motor - with only the electric motor connected it runs for about 1.5 secs up to 60 secs after engine start so it is the car that is telling the lock to unlock. I did a hard reset of the car's computers with no change. I read the codes and found two general electrical faults and signal faults. I cleared these and then recycled the tailgate lock and started the engine - the fault came back but no fault codes were logged in the system.

So at this time I am at a loss what the issue is. I tried closing the top tailgate and disconnecting it at the connector with the intention of just using the complete tailgate but disconnecting the top tailgate electrically also disables the bottom tailgate so no access to the cargo area.

Ideally I would like to try a new lock but there is no where I can get access to one without buying one, so not prepared to do that just yet.

Other ideas would be appreciated.

Hi

Water in the tailgate switch was our problem. Cleaned and dried it no more problems. Yours seems more complicated.

Apologies- I thought this was an old thread!
Anyway, mine does the same, only on start and about 19 times out if 20. I've also had the DSC off randomly which may be connected to the consequent power drain.
Also sometimes when I have re shut the tailgate, I can't open it again.
Is it worth replacing the switch? About £30 on e bay so hopefully a cheap fix.
Neil

Any one with any ideas other than the switch - I checked it today and there is no corrosion inside it (as said when disconnected the issue is still there). The thinking is that maybe there is an intermittent short in the cables that go to the switch - maybe a fault in the Body Control Unit.

I have a fault code back. B1C42 - Tailgate Release Switch 2 - Signal Failure - Signal Stays Low.

Does anyone have detailed information on this.

Thanks
