TDV8 EGR Problems

Had interesting conversation with master tech yesterday , who revealed that V8 are starting to have problems with broken springs and heads coming off valves. It had been a rural area problem initially, but now spreading to town dealerships. First I had heard of any v8 issues with these.
The heads can't go anywhere if they detach and symptoms are difficult starting, smoking and vibration. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Oh marvellous - something else to have sleepless nights over. No chance I suppose of Land Rover fixing the EGR problem at their expense if it occurs and are they bothering to re-design any of the faulty parts?

Presumably this is not directly connected to your Big Bang event. We're looking forward to hearing your post mortem report on the late departed TDV8 especially the initial failure i.e. did the turbo break at the compressor side and the engine ingest bits of compressor and die violently or did something fail in the cylinders or heads first and spit broken bits into the turbo side. Or none of these Confused

Someone will know the most common cause of failures and I'm guessing he is the man at LR's engine reconditioners who receives all the broken ones. Any way we can get to hear from him?

Good luck with the latest episode in this saga -its a gripping read if somewhat disturbing! 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Have already replaced a few sets of EGR's on TDV8's. Not quite as easy or simple as TDV6, but the valves cost more, and there is more labour involved too Rolling Eyes

You would think that city vehicles would suffer first but that isn't the case.
I don't think my EGRs caused the failure, I think a seal in the turbo let go as the induction system was full of oil as was the exhaust. Think they said 2 lts in inter cooler and and 3 in centre box.
Preliminary report suggests a catastrophic failure of No 8 cylinder due to hydraulic stress. The piston was broken in two apparently but still being investigated.
The left turbo was ceased solid and the right had suffered bearing failure but this could be as a result of oil starvation. It's hard when so much damage is evident to see what went first. The turbos didn't break up, the bits of piston that escaped was what was found in induction system. When LR report back, I will let you know. Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Thanks; look forward to that. Would be great if we could subsequently put together a guide for TDV8 owners with recommendations for any preventative measures that can be taken. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
