2005 sc engine oil change question

hi, i need to change the engine oil on my 2005 4.2 sc engine, there seems to be 2 ways to change the oil, either drain oil from sump plug or get a vac pump and pump it out from the top, which method is better?

I'm no mechanic but I was always told to drain oil through the sump. You get all the particles that may be on the magnetic sump plug out and you can leave it overnight to drip out as much old oil as possible. Vacuum pumps are for service bays where time is money............... and they don't get all the crap out from the sump. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Don't cut corners and buy cheap oil.

I've been told that the book time to change the timing chains is around 30 hours, the chains and tensioners come in at £500+ on their own. Whistle

As Tim says,,drain from sump plug & probably worth putting a flush through it aswell then leave a couple of hours before putting sump plug back in & use the proper oil NOT the cheap S@@@e from local motor factors.

I use Fuchs Titan Race Pro, it's an over spec'ed race grade oil so better than the Castrol oil that is recommended by JLR

It depends on the oil you use and how you drive. If you drive gently and use synthetic oil then 10k miles is ok. I personally change my oil annually as I don't do that many miles.

As for the filter it's common practice to relace the oil filter at every service. An oil filter costs £15, a reconditioned engine is £8k, I'll leave it to you to decide which you would rather change haha.

Cabin, pollen filters I tend to change when they need doing, my current cabin and pollen filters are 3 years old.

As I don't do many miles I change the air filter bi-annually. But again this depends on your driving and enviroment, it is usually recommended you change the air filter at every service.

With my car about to roll over to 100k miles, I'm mulling over whether to switch to Millers 10w40 oil:

0w-40 is the wrong spec isn't it? 5W30 normally.

Oil brand is a very subjective thing.

Unless it does something really bad oils don't tend to stand out.

I don't like paying more than £20 per 5 litres (fully synthetic 5W30) and you can get it for less if you buy 4 bottles worth.
I run AC Delco in my Jag S/C. I like to get it for ~£17 for 5l when you purchase 4. That's about the same as trade price.

Sorry made a typo, Should have been 10w40

It's different to required spec yes, but the increased viscosity should offset against engine wear, meaning less future wear. There may well be a drop in MPG and horse power due to increased rotational resistance but then you've got the choice between power or life. The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long!

The difference between the two oil's is marginal but based on the numbers I can't see how it can have a negative effect on the engine.

That being said I'm still mulling it over, I may try it and see how the engine sounds/performs and make the decision based on that.

Link also wrong

A good quality synthetic oil should be all that is required to ensure long engine life, (as well as frequent changes).

I vaguely remember my Jag S/C manual states 5W40 can be used (and it's selection is dependent on ambient temperature range)

Considering the RRS manual only states 5W30 I don't know why on earth you would want to go against this or what benefit you would gain.
