Sport Gearbox Oil Level Check

Hi there, I have had my gearbox replaced after auto tranmission failure error and F displayed on the dash, a filter and oil change with new software did not remedy the situation. After the recon gearbox was oput it, I realizedd the technician only checked the oil level when car was OFF and after he opened the plug, some oil dripped out and he ssaid there was plenth there. Is the oil level to be checked when car is running? I dont want to drive with less oil and mess this expensive box again ! thanks Amir Mughal

Yes, it must be checked whilst the engine is running BUT the temperature of the gearbox fluid must be between 30 and 50 degrees. The dealers use an approved Land Rover diagnostic equipment to monitor the transmission fluid temperature.

If no fluid loss is apparent when the filler/level plug is removed, with the engine at idle, fill the transmission until a small thread of oil runs from oil filler/level hole.

That should do it. Wink Malaysia Boleh!

gearbox oil level check

Indeed you are correct
We checked the oil level with engine running, gearbox took in another 2 litres !
While coming off the ramp, I got a transmission failure error on dash, is this because we just topped up oil with engine running ?
I restarted car and it was all clear.
These cars seem very intelligent !

Thanks again Amir Mughal
