RRS 2011 TDV6 HSE Overheating

My 2011 RRS with 26,000 miles on the clock has today just been 7 miles/1hr stop and then 7 miles and when back in the garage there was a crackling sound that sounded like overheating from under the car. Opened the engine bonnet and the engine seems very hot. Took the oil cap off and some smoke coming out. Check coolant level that looks fine. Oil level is fine.

Temperature gauge seems ok. I did notice that where one looks at the coolant level there is what looks like a small pipe with what could be a sensor on the top flopping around. There is a clip on the side which I suspect should clip the vertical pipe to something else. This might be a red herring and nothing to do with the over heating.

When I turn on the ignition there are two warning triangles at the top of the instrument cluster. An orange one on the left hand side and a red one on the right hand side. When I start the engine both extinguish. Nothing in the handbook mentions the orange warning triangle and its' significance.

I am currently in France not returning to the UK for 3-4 weeks although there is a LR Dealer near us in La Rochelle.

(I can take a photo of the vertical pipe although suspect not the overheating issue.) Suggestions most welcome.

Anything connected to the bottle is only a level sensor, the water temp sensor is in the inlet manifold. It is possible after 7 miles the thermostat hasn't opened so you will get local hot spots but if gauge reading normal then it will be fine, gauge/sender fault usually gives no reading or full gauge. The clips hold the breather for the washer fluid tank below 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Many thanks for the reply. I have attached three photos. 1. showing the pipe that I was describing that is not clipped in. 2. The temp gauge at 18.37 when I have just started the engine and 3. Temp gauge at 18.52 ie 15 minutes later after I have just driven about 6 miles. Outside temp is 24 degrees. Also from photo 1 I think I have too much coolant in the coolant bottle - what do you think?

Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell what the pipe in the photograph does and how it should be clipped in? Also any other thoughts on my overheating experience today?
