MOT Failure

Just heard from the garage that my RRS has failed its MOT for a split CV gaiter and a worn wheel bearing.

First MOT fail I've had in years and certainly the first one on a car that is less than 5 years old!

Replacements covered by warranty so no great problem (except for the usual "we won't get the part until tomorrow" line, of course).

Out of interest, presumably the bearing will be changed out of the hub rather than a new hub being put in?

And hopefully this will get to the bottom of the slightly odd front tyre wear I've noticed in the last few weeks... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Just realised - the vehicle was serviced less than 3 weeks ago. I'm fairly sure that one or other of the CV gaiter and wheel bearing would have been noticeable then.

I can feel a discussion with the garage coming on... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Turns out that the wheel bearing was only an advisory (hence not raised at service Rolling Eyes ) because of a very slight bit of play but they changed it anyway.

I had a 4 wheel alignment done too which showed a number of areas out of tolerance. Hopefully the tyre wear issue will sort itself too now. Might get them balanced and swapped around though just to be sure.

Could do with an extended bit of trouble-free running now... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

while the wheel bearing can be replaced, you need a machine shop with a press, plus the extra labour costs involved, it works out more than the cost of a new hub assembly, they would have fitted a complete new unit ( hub assembly ) i had mine done last week, £120 for the hub, plus fitting ( an hour ) plus vat, so they didnt replace it, they must have just tightened it up, so leep an eye on it, as it will become loose again 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

I did wonder if that was the case with the bearing. As it's been done under warranty I'd guess they've changed the hub. How would one tighten the wheel bearing? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

As we were trying a horse out in the trailer this weekend, I had the window open in order to hear any unhappy noises from said beast. Instead, heard a mechanical noise which we assumed was from the trailer. Turned out to be from the RRS wheel that had the gaiter and bearing done. I guessed stone guard and, having taken the wheel off, I was right. They'd managed to press the stone guard against the brake disc resulting in the noise. Oddly, not audible with the window up which is why I hadn't heard it on the drive home from the garage on Thursday. No wonder I was getting some funny looks on Friday at work in the car park!

Managed to get it clear of the disc so more noise. Also managed to get covered in grease because, although they'd put a new CV gaiter on, they hadn't bothered to clean any of the grease that had been sprayed all over the rear of the hub etc. The brake disc was clean however - they'd noted that the disc had been cleaned as part of the work - I wonder how effective the brake pad on that side will be now though as it must have been contaminated with grease. Also wonder how bad the gaiter rip was as there's a lot of grease - I hope the CV joint is ok. Will be interested to see if that needs changing in the future...

So, further evidence of the rubbish service at Hartwell's of Oxford. If it wasn't for the LR warranty, I wouldn't be going there.

Oh, and the horse was happy in the trailer so he'll be going on his first little trip out in a week or two. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
