Smaller front number plate - is it possible?

Hi guys,

I have just bought a RRS 2005 05 and pick it up tomorrow!

I am going to be putting my private plate on which is S15 *** and only 6 digits long. I want to put a smaller front plate size on the front but want to keep legal font and spacing which I have found on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...0510916537

Question is can I get a smaller backing plate from anywhere or can I simply remove the backing plate and attach the plate to the bumper?

Also does anyone know where to get a full size shaped rear plate where the Euro blue part covers the left hand side and not just a standard size blue tab?

Any help much appreciated! Thumbs Up

Yes you can remove the backing plate and attach the plate to the bumper, it is held on by 2 self treading screws.

The only problem is that you are left with 2 small holes but they can easily be hidden.

That's what we normally use here in Switzerland to install the number plate and is made for the size of our plates.
This particular one also allows me to easily move the plates from one car to the other, here they are personal and not tied to the car and you can have 2 cars on the same plate, tax and insurance(for classic cars even up to 8 or 9)

My post was more to show it technically possible and easy, but no indications about the legality of it as different in the UK. '08 RRS TDV8

Hi I order a standard plate then measure in from both ends and mark with a
stanley knife the same way that you would mark a tile to cut it. I then hold it
on a square edge i.e workbench and snap down over the scribed line it breaks
clean everytime.I bought my rear plate from ebay from a seller called hardridden
£11.95,l have posted a couple of photos of the plates.
Cheers Tommy

Just remember if you are going to do this that you must keep the name/address details of the plate maker on the bit that remains otherwise it is an offence. This is to stop manufacture of show plates which is now illegal apparently. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

Is this true? My plate says absolutely nothing on it apart from the reg......I had a new one made as I like a standard size plate and prefer it stuck on rather than screws.

Tis true

But the likelyhood of plod checking your plate (unless it's blatantly illegal) is very slim. RRS gone

I'm sure there's no need to worry the plod in Manc Land are renowned for their friendliness and understanding of clients committting traffic offence, says he who's only ever had 2 speeding tickets both on Manchester motorways at just under a ton Whistle

Fines up to £1000 no mention of any points.

The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -

The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
