Australia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Stornoway Grey
Flashing trailer lights

I recently towed a trailer that LED rear lights, but rather than staying on permanently they flashed like a mobile disco. Someone told me that the RRS sends a pulse through the electrics to detect if a trailer is fitted but with LED lights there no load required so the RRS doesn't know that a trailer is connected.

Does anyone know how I get around this as I've just ordered a new camper trailer that has LED rear lights?

A much cheaper option is to wire in a single 21W bulb to one of the indicator circuits somewhere on your trailer. The car will then recognise the load.

Hey there Gordon,

I have tried wiring load resistors into each one the indicator loops on a horse float and I am still getting a strobe light effect on the indicators.

The indicators work fine and also register on the dash of the RRS which they didn't do prior to installation, so it implies that the load resistors they are now doing their bit.

Do you know by chance if there is another part of the circuit that the system is load testing as well ie Brakes Lights. Do I need to install another resistor here as well?

BTW the resistors I am using are from page 115 of this cattledog

I used an actual 21W globe (no issues with heat etc) rather than a power resistor, but AFAIK that shouldn't make a difference - you should only need to wire between the indicator circuit and ground.
