Overheated supercharger?

Drove down to Cornwall this morning and those that know the A38 know that there is much kick-down driving to pass caravans and ashmatic VW campers.

Sadly on arriving near our destination of Newquay, the car went into what felt like limp mode, then virtually die mode. The hapless RRS could hardly go uphill at all, and we stuttered to a 30mph crawl and eventually I had to admit defeat and pull over. The thrill of being passed by caravans etc that I passedback on the M5 while I waited for Land Rover Recovery.

Well, after 45 minutes (and having been given the once over by the local police) the recovery van arrived. Given the once over, started the car and all seemed fine.

The mechanic had no idea, and I can only think that the supercharger overheated and cut out - its happended on theMerc E55 before, Anyone else had a similar experience?

It just refused to rev over about 3000 and felt like it was on 4 cylinders. Not lumpy, just gutless.

Sounds like the E270 I had. That went into limp mode on the way to a stag weekend in Cornwall and wouldn't even go up a hill. Thankfully the few trips I have done down there since have been in the Alfa which has been faultless. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Sounds like a boost leak causing it to overboost which the ecu then doesnt like.

If this was on a turbo car thats what i would guess at, or maybe a MAf or MAP going down.

Malaysia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Chawton White

It is very rare that the supercharger itself fails.

Lack of boost is usually due to the supercharger drive belt broken/slipping or there is a supercharger air intake fault or there is a major air leakage (after the supercharger). Malaysia Boleh!

Usually you would be able to find codes, did they check with the right tools that can read all propriety codes from the RR?

For some SC models, the + and - where switched for the supercharger intercooler pump (found it out myself when I placed a larger capacity pump). I can also remember that I found alter a TSB, but can’t find it now so am not sure if it could affect your car. The effect is that the pump will still function, but at a much reduced capacity.

So that could explain that after a couple of high boost runs the system gets very hot.

When it is getting to hot (for a period of time) for the ECU, then a fault code should be registered, and when it happens twice (2 drive cycles) the MIL (Check engine light) should turn on. However I have never experienced this, so am not sure if the behavior of the car matches the above. RRS SDV6 HEV Dynamic

Thanks for the input. On the Merc it was the intercooler pump that would overheat and then shut down. I'll see if I can get LR to to a diagnostic. Thanks Avos 2007 RRS Supercharged, Black & Ivory, 22" Overfinch and MY10 rear lights.

LTB00041v2 concerns "Reduced Power With The Possibility Of Diagnostic Trouble Code
(DTC) P0096 and/or P2601 Stored".

4.2L V8 Supercharged Only VIN- range :5A901924-7A109767 are affected.

The cause is "the electrical harness supply and earth for the auxiliary coolant pump may be found to be cross connected in connector C3006, causing the Engine Control Module (ECM) to reduce power to prevent damage because the pump flow is low. The auxiliary coolant pump will be degraded because it has been running backwards".

Thanks for that. The trip certainly involved lots of +/- and so I think this may be the answer. Will report back later in the week as I am told Truro's LR dealership tends to be stacked out on a Monday dealing with holiday maker vehicles as well as the local LR population. Mr. Green
