Fuel Cost - still voting Tory??

Extracted from the Beeb website:

Conservative MP Tim Yeo, who chairs the Commons Environmental Audit Committee, told the BBC it would be "a grave mistake" if the government were to give in to the hauliers' demands.

"Emissions from road transport, in particular cars and trucks, have risen by 12% since 1997," Mr Yeo said.

"Over that same period fuel duty has actually fallen in real terms by more than a tenth, so the government has actually been weakening its tax measures to deal with carbon emissions."

If this is his attitude to the life blood of industry, you can just imagine what they think of us mere commuters!!

People who don't tax/ins their cars cost us millions ! Also costs us should anything happen accident wise when hit etc by an uninsured driver !

Best solution = Bin road tax and reduce ins. prem's...... And then increase fuel costs - then we all pay - and we only have to pay as much as we need to use " pay as you go " Confused

That hit's those in rural areas hardest, many of whom are on low incomes.
- Some believe that is a tax on the poor which ain't popular.

It would suit me though. 2022 P440e AB

The same reasoning behind expanding the VED increase to cars made back in 2001. Also viewed as a tax that hit "poorer people", but more sinisterly a quick and easy method of taxing several times more cars Evil or Very Mad

I suppose I have to pose the question....if the government (of any political persuasion) had to reduce fuel duty how would it replace the 'lost' revenue?

I dont agree with the high fuel prices either but huge amounts of revenue (rightly or wrongly) are raised via the duty on fuel.

Perhaps we need to look at raising revenue otherways.....I can the see 'self employed' running for cover as we speak Smile

As MDP says, I think the only sensible and fair way to operate that revenue stream is to dump VED and add it onto fuel duty. I wouldn't like it anymore than the next man, especially as I do about 25k miles a year, but it would turn driving into a pay as you go activity....

Dude, if we scrap the NHS, your insurance premiums will rocket and surgery etc will be the preserve of the rich. Thats not even fine if you got it. The US system is a mess and a sorry tale. I hope we find a way to make the NHS work for the good of the country...

1,3,4 and 5 are great though! Thumbs Up

Paulo is spot on Thumbs Up

Dumping the NHS would be a disaster (Although some would say it IS a disaster at the moment). The problem with NHS is not underfunding but massive waste of the financing it gets.

I hear what you say - but a lot of rich people live in rural areas too.... Poor people shouldn't have a car - they cant afford one - sod'em they can walk or move Wink

Our ins premiums are so high as are council tax/rates as we subsidise those that dont pay ! With cars - its simple - you dont pay for your petrol = you dont go anywhere ! .. you dont go anywhere - you dont need a car thus you dont need ins.

In fact they ought to make it £20 a litre - I would save money at this price ................. I would walk to wo*k Thumbs Up
