One policeman was killed as he was caught up in the fighting. The game was suspended after the tear gas used to control the rioting fans drifted onto the pitch, effecting the players.

If this happened here in the UK, our national game would be torn apart by the international powers that be. Our teams would be banned from all European competitions and the national team would become persona-non-gratia in international circles.

Watch this space, nothing will be done about this Italian incident. After all, their game was ripped apart by match fixing and betting scams last season. A number of their top teams were heavily fined and relegated to the 3rd division of Italian football. But they were still allowed to enter, and win the world cup a few months later.

You're dead right TB. Italy is a fundamentally corrupt country, "a nation of cheats" as Cloughie once called them. So, it always seems to be a case of "oh well. it's only poor old Italy" uttered from the authorities when they transgress, and everybody ignores it.

However, when it comes to us, different matter. I'm convinced the whole world is jealous of our culture and achievemnents, and therefore enjoy nothing more better than a bit of "Brit Bashing" at every oportunity. Didn't England get kicked out Europe (Heysel was it?) for something tragically uncharacteristic? Make the whole nation suffer 'coz their British and should know better! Any excuse!

After Heysel English clubs were banned from Europe and if we are being honest, they deserved to be banned as our so called football fans were out of control. The English authorities have done a fantastic job of cleaning up our nations act. In recent years the behavior of English fans at international events has been exemplary.
