Satnav screen gear select letter / L320 gen1 workshop manual

Hi all - I’ve got a 2007 gen1 RRS TDV8 and love it. I’ve recently taken the plunge and upgraded the steering wheel to the 2010 version - taking the opportunity to treat myself to a heated steering wheel and flappy paddle gears also 😉🙌🏻, and I’ve upgraded the sat nav screen to the 2010 version.

The compass now works! 😂 It didn’t work on my original screen.

But the reversing camera never works. I think I’ve realised why. The gear letter on the 4x4 info screen never changes - it’s stuck in ‘N’. It thinks it’s in Neutral regardless of what gear it’s in. The Hi/Lo transfer box still shows correctly, just the gear letter. It does display the correct gear letter on the binnacle display though.

Question 1) So - what tells the satnav screen what gear the car is in please? Any ideas what might be causing this? The issue followed me from the original screen, to another gen1 screen, and now to the 2010 gen2 screen - so I know the problem isn’t the screen.

Question 2) On a similar thought, can someone please link me to a gen1 L320 workshop manual? Not the owners manual - the L320 version of RAVE. That would be very handy going forward.

Thanks!

Hi Andy K - yes to both : unusual and annoying! Lol.

I’ve got an android head unit but retained part of the factory stereo so that the screen still works, but I’m pretty sure the screen gear letter never worked - even before I started playing with bits and changing the stereo.

It wasn’t an issue until I got a reversing camera. I updated the CCF, but it’s not showing the camera. Then the penny dropped - if the screen doesn’t know it’s in Reverse, it won’t switch to the camera, even if that option is enabled. 😭

Thanks Andy K. Yes, I’ve enabled that with the IID tool.

I’ll check behind the dash again - if there is a video on the move device, it’s not one that I’ve fitted….

If I recall correctly, pre-facelift RRS does not inform the post-facelift screen it is in reverse in a manner this screen expects. Something with CAN messages, either this very information was realized without CAN or was transmitted on a CAN bus that is not available to the screen. Regards etc.,

Wojtek

Hi TheWojtek - thanks, that may be the case, but the issue was first noticed with the original gen1 screen, and also with a different gen1 screen installed to test. This issue has then followed to the gen2 screen. Because the issue is repeated on three different screens, I’m confident that’s not the issue.

As for the root cause, 🤷‍♂️. TBC….

Well my facelift screen reverse cam works.
Need gap iid though. Mods: FaceLift/D4 Sat Nav Display and reverse camera. BT. Remote FBH. Parking light switch position. Rear reading light activated by doors.

Good news Andy K - I’m guessing the gear letters on your screen work also, ie the screen knows it’s in reverse, so switches the feed to video (reverse cam)
