Steering tight

I have read that Lower Steering Column knuckle joints are a common fault.
Have been under the car most of the day trying remove.
On 3.6 it looks as the top of column has:
10mm retaining bolt at top accessed from engine compartment, removed.
E11 bolt at base of column, what a pig!! slackened.

I believe the column should then slide upwards?
I can move it or see clearly its removal route.

Any one done this job?

Yes once you've undone/removed those two bolts, the lower column can be slid upwards from the steering rack and down from the upper column as the lower has an extendable/collapsable section within the silver "foil" covered portion that shortens it for removal.

IIRC I removed the small heat shield at the top of the suspension arm to better get my hands on it and wiggled the lower shaft out of the gap. pics below.

p.s. the lower bolt can be reached relatively easily from access by the driveshaft but you may need to turn the sterring slightly to get to the bolt. - some pics at the bottom. TBH I cant remember if there's a small plastic dirt shield around the chassis leg there as it was a while since I did mine but if so it's easy to remove and replace.

Many thanks for confirming, I will have another battle this coming weekend before changing gearbox filter / fluid.
Car has done 139K and I don't think its ever been changed.

Tight Steering

Lower Steering column removed, what a game LOL
Had to remove steering rack hydraulic connections to allow removal.
I have manged to lubricate and free up joints, applied cooper slip and replaced steering column.
Steering is now super easy to turn.
