Hi All,

I recently bought my first RRS, a 2008 TDV8, which I must say I should have bought years ago

What it didn't seem to have though was a reversing camera, which wasnt a problem as I could always fit one later, however I fitted the tow bar for the first time today, and in the middle of the bumper above the tow bar is a button camera! (wired)

When putting the car in reverse there is no black screen or other indication that one is fitted, so do you think this is likely to be an original factory device, and something has gone wrong, or something that has been added, and also not working?

The rear sensors work fine, it does not seem to have a factory DVD or TV, as it has only 3 items on the main sat nav menu, but does have a working bluetooth for the phone, if any of that might have a bearing on things.

Any aftermarket wires under the passenger seat, as viewed from rear ?

There are a couple of ways to add camera

1. Fit a GVIF under the seat and wire in.

2. Upgrade the screen to the Facelift or D4 screen. (You get better and later navigation)
Around £130 with cables
You need a gap iid diagnostic tool to enable camera with this. You really need one of these as a landrover owner though. They are nearly £500
You may also need to upgrade to the later phone system if the current one doesn’t work.

I will have to try and trace the wire from the rear bumper and see where it goes to then.

A GVIF is something I read about when I first found it didn't have a camera, or a TV etc. so I could always revisit that again, but I didn't know about upgrading to the D4 screen.
I will have a look for more information on that conversion as that seems possibly a better option if it has updated navigation, the only drawback being the iid tool of course.
I do have a Mongoose JLR and software though if that would work as an alternative ?

The phone works quite well, not cutting edge, but at least I can make and receive calls!

Only the iid can do the magic to make the reverse cam work on the later display

A small part of me was worried your existing phone bt wasn’t compatible with the new display and therefore you would need the phone upgrade too

You wouldn’t be disappointed with later phone though

Well the D4 screen is almost installed apart from fitting the rear camera somehow and connecting the extended fakra cable.

Did you fit a camera you yours Andy, and if so, which pins did you use on the back of the screen ?
I have found a couple of threads about fitting one but none are clear which to use, and I dont have a circuit diagram of the unit to see.

The display is, as you pointed out, far better than the old one, and the phone still works, except for giving me the phonebook, the button for which is greyed out. I presume the later phone upgrade you mentioned is achieved with the gap iid tool as well ?

I will be sending off for one of these shortly now the rest is done.

For the phone, a new module is required from D4. £85 upwards

Your nav all working ok ?

This is the D4 Bluetooth mod.
Disconnect the old module in the rear right
Fit new module and plug in the fibre optics and then 2 wires for power
Ground and + from infotainment on (or electric aerial amp above right rear window )
Can’t remember if this signal is available on the old phone ecu connector

This is what I used. The spacing is wrong so you need to cut different amounts off each end and then put the pins in the correct holes. Looks a bit of a mess. But it is robust and functional and inexpensive

Sat Nav seems to be there but have to connect the fakra extention and abs wire still as I ranout of daylight today The compass is working at the moment though, which it didn't before, but its about 90 degrees out, I presume that will fix itself when the GPS comes on stream.

Thanks for the info on the camera connection and connectors, that should be easy enough now I know where I need them to go, and as the phone is working well enough, I will leave the module swap for another time and put the money towards the gap iiD tool!

I found the wire from the rear bumper camera sitting on the top of the radio by the way, so someone must have thought about connecting it the past, and not bothered when they found out what was required.

If you don’t want to run a new abs wire in, I used a redundant green wire and then put the red loop wire on the dvd connector under the seat.

I used your tip with the link wire Andy, a bit neater than running another.
Sat Nav (and compass) now working as it should and all back together again

GAP iid tool ordered and on the way, so we'll see if the camera works early next week, and I managed to connect it to pins 2 and 5 with a small 2 pin plug and wires from an old desktop computer speaker.

So you should be able to see if the camera works and is correctly wired.

Goto the main menu
On the bar at the top of the screen, hold you finger on it in the middle for over 3 seconds
Than remove and hold finger over in the left of the top bar
After 3 seconds a key pad should appear
Enter 753 press enter

Select reverse gear with ign II on

Select video inputs test
Select rear camera

IM 90% sure the image should display
If it doesn’t check camera has power

If it does work, remove out of reverse an see if image goes black.
Confirms where camera is powered from

Ideally camera should be powered from rear power socket or the blue radio aerial wire (available above the rear side windows, on dvd connector under seat, at LCD display and probably on phone ecu . So that the cam works when going fowards or manoeuvring
But if it works, leave it.

Cameras are. PAL OR NTSC. Only one type will work correctly

While in the test menu
There are 2 speed mph values

So you can check Abs wire connected correctly Mods: FaceLift/D4 Sat Nav Display and reverse camera. BT. Remote FBH. Parking light switch position. Rear reading light activated by doors.

I should really read all the threads sometimes as I'd not seen this before.

Secret menu screen wouldn't show me any kind of video, or black screen even to start with.
Luckily iiD tool arrived yesterday and i went through the process of telling it there was a camera connected.

After it said there wasn't enough power in the battery, I hit the "abort" button, It didn't seem to accept that though and it switched everything off!!
All came back on again eventually and it then said the camera was present. Into reverse then and a screen appeared but it was flashing colours and lines going across at 45 degrees

Thinking it was a PAL / NTSC problem I tried switching it, but still the same, so not knowing if the camera was good or not, I connected an old video cam up to it with the same result.
Next check the wiring and pins etc, all good, so I then programmed the CCF with TV and companion cam fitted to make the other pins in the video connector live.
Connecting to TV pins (1&4) gave exactly the same result, but the companion cam pins (3&6) It worked perfectly!

So it seems that on my head unit, and I presume some others, the signal and shield terminals are the opposite way round, but it seems strange that it would be opposite polarity for one of the inputs in that connector.

Anyway it's all working now, and at least I will have a spare rear cam when the one I ordered yesterday when I thought mine was U/S arrives

I now need to start looking at what else I can play with, with this iiD tool .........
