OBD

Can anyone recommend a half decent OBD fault checker compatible with IOS.
Preferably one that displays the description of the fault as well as the fault code.
Thanks in advance. RRS (MY13) Santorini Black SDV6 HSE luxuary

If you want cheap or value for money. you could buy one of these.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Automate-ELM327...SwRGRc2F94

+ £5 for an app.

MUST BE THE WIFI version to work with iPhone.

or for the best (which most ppl have on here)

GAP IID BT which is ~£425 and does loads.
program keys, upgrade software, change config options, just works. (unlike that cheap one)

You need one that reads the whole code not just the generic code. This can then be x-ref’d to the workshop manual which I’ve found invaluable in fault finding. Saved me a lot of time fault finding on my RSE and nailed it in minutes. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Andy thanks for the link to EBay.

Brit plumber, thanks for the heads up about full code reading capability.

It’s unclear whether the ELM327 reads full or only generic fault codes. Also whether it can display the actual fault description.

I’ve already paid for the ELM327 but have since put the seller on notice not to ship until the uncertainty is resolved either by you you guys or the seller himself.

Many thanks RRS (MY13) Santorini Black SDV6 HSE luxuary

The thing with ELM327 is that it’s not a device, it’s a standard. So dozens of tools use ELM327 but not all are equal. Some will clear faults but not give detailed DTCs, some will give good DTCs for the engine and nothing else. They are a bit hit and miss until you try them out. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

just as well buy the right tool first, gap or similar that does it all, makes it keep after first fault or two. (unless your mate has one you can borrow) Very Happy

Thanks for the advice re what OBD reader to buy.
I cancelled the ELY327 as originally bought and have since ordered the Vgate VS890 Maxiscan OBD2 CAN.
I’ll report back on my assessment. RRS (MY13) Santorini Black SDV6 HSE luxuary

Hi all,

Unfortunately, I don't have a mate who has one of these!! Big Cry

However, I'm keen to get a read on a serious fault warning that's started to appear randomly on my RRS. The problem is that my garage is saying that they can't fit me in until the back end of next week and I've had the same answer from two other garages too. I've got lots of miles to do next week and I'm not comfortable doing it without knowing what the problem is...

If anyone reading this is in the Manchester (UK) area, has a decent OBD scanner and is prepared to do a scan for me either tomorrow or over the weekend then I'd be most grateful! I'm not trying to get a freebie either - happy to pay, I'm just trying to save time not money.

If this post breaks any rules then admin please delete, I'm new on here!! Embarassed

Thanks

Just thought I'd update on my cheeky request to borrow an OBD reader.... I now have one of my own!! Laughing

Thanks for the offers of help - it's clear there are some great people on this forum.

If anyone is in the market for one then I can recommend the one I've gone for. It's the Diaglink from Autel. https://www.autel.com/autelcms/Specialty%20Products/554.jhtml It's the same hardware as some of their more expensive models but it comes locked to just one car make. (hence the cheaper price) You have to manually flash the firmware with your brand of choice (Jaguar LandRover is one). If you want more car makes then you have to buy them at $10 each.

I paid £66 on ebay for this. For a full system scanner with the full breakdown of codes, including help on possible causes and further actions, that seems like a good deal. I found 3 faults and the info in the scanner matched perfectly to the workshop manual faults description.

whilst I feel like I've found a good deal on the scanner - the news it's telling me is going to be a lot more costly!!! Big Cry
