im going to guess that its a breather of some sort, but have often wondered the same myself. The top part unscrews. I wondered if it was a diff breather for when crossing deep water but could be totally wrong 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

i was half hoping this is what it was for would be noce to have a little test point to look at the engine oil now and again.... the simple thinks in life 2007 TDV6 RRS HSE..now gone 2012 3.0 SDV6 RRS HSE |

It’s on a bayonet fitting and is for vacuuming the oil from the sump. Great way to change the oil, it takes about 5 mins to suck it all out with a good vacuum pump and 10 mins to complete the job with new filter too.

Yeah. Look at ideal place to put some sort of stick down with markings on it. |

You can see where the pick up point is once your under it. it's next to the sump plug so will extract all but the smallest amount of oil. and as we don't flush the engine oil then what does it matter if a small amount is left.... |
