Just to update, it was the brake peddle switch that caused the problem.

Was the "local garage" also the local specialist as my confidence in the "specialist" would have been somewhat dented after an episode like that? I also have a 22year old Defender 90 and my "local" specialist was really good up to the time I wanted the tailgate/ rear door replaced and they were determined that all I needed was a recycled panel from one of their scrap yard cars. I am in the fortunate position to be able to afford a new one, sprayed the right colour and with all new fittings as I felt that buying used would probably land me back in the same position a couple of years down the line. The original parts had had 21 years of heavy duty use so I wasn't worried about replacing them with new. I changed to another specialist (Lix Toll Land Rover) who is a long drive away but who do what I ask them to do without trying to get me to use parts stripped off an older car....... and they are less costly into the bargain! Lix Toll also suggested some further modifications to the new door to increase the longevity of the new door - swing away spare wheel carrier takes the weight off the door hinges! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
