FBH

Hi
I have the standard FBH in my 06 Sport, with 156000km on the clock.
I've yet to buy the timer / remote from Bodsy, and there is some uncertainty as to whether it ill actually work as a retrofit (at least my local indie says so....)

Currently the temperature is -17 degrees celsius. Went to start the car today and it took at least 5 minutes to actually start the engine. The FBH only kicks in when the engine is on? Which means for the most part when it is this cold it's only function is to try and warm up the fuel a bit quicker

Probably a silly query but just want to check. 2019 RRS P400e Autobiography

The FBH is not used as a pre warming heater, it will only run when the engine is running allowing the engine coolant temperature to rise quicker to heat the interior and reduce emissions during a cold start and warm up.
The timer will allow you to preheat the vehicle before you start the engine. Life's too short to drive boring cars !

I'm sure if I was in a place where it got to -17 I would have ordered a remote FBH start by now lol

Have faith, it will work. (as long as your FBH is currently working, check the FBH exhaust once the engine is running)

if cost is an issue, you could order one of these, and connect it to a manual switch inside.

I understand the above, but won't the heater have it's own emissions? Probably much worse than the RRS engine, but not likely taken into account for the government & brochure's?

New to RRS how do you know if you have a FBH?

Don't be too harsh if it's stupid question of the day

Ezituper,

Looking from the front of the car, it is under the bonnet, front right side and looks like this:-

Ezituper: see below cribbed from Tim:

IIRC all Diesel RRS L320 (ie up to the introduction of the L494 models in 2013) have a built in auxilary diesel powered heater that should come on automatically when the ambient temperature is below 5c to help reduce cold start emissions. It is possible to retro fit a timer system and also remote control to pre-heat the engine on cold mornings to give you warm air from the heater more quickly. Often new to LR owners see smoke coming from below the front bumper or near side wheel arch and panic, but that is the exhaust from the heater. There should be a metal unit with pipes going into it under the bonnet on the passenger side just in front of the battery box which is the FBH.
. Not sure how it applies to petrol vehicles but look under the bonnet and see if it's there!

I second the thoughts from Andy K. I live in Sussex but still rate the recently installed remote for my fbh as a joy. Half an hour before I plan to go out I just press the LR button on my key fob. Then finish my morning coffee, go out and start the car (which starts that much easier) and push the fast defrost prog button on my heater. The coolant temperature has risen to the point where the screen immediately starts to clear helped by the heated front and rear screens. Don't get me wrong; it's not Hot. But the water temp gauge does move off its stop. Also side windows start defrosting. And I feel sure it must put less strain on the engine to be asked to start from warm rather than -17c!

And just for clarification, the fbh can be on its own as described by Tim above, or it can have a timer controlled start so that you can set it to come on at a set time, or it can be controlled remotely from your key fob. Robin

Yeah that's about right Laughing

I guess if you have a tiny engine (running for a short Rolling Eyes time), making a massive engine more efficient, it makes sense

I don't think it's all about emissions though. Improves reliability and smoothness of the engine

Well, like Finland, Russia has extremes of temperature and they love the remote units for the Webastos. You will find that with the FBH pre warming the engine, that it will start the engine much much easier than it currently does.
Your local indi sounds like he does not know what the Webasto is capable of....

The FBH will be independently started by the controller, it is not like a piston driven engine, it is a pure Fuel Burning Heater, so will fire up easier than an engine will. It definitely does not need the cars engine to be running although it will work normally when the engine starts.

I use mine all the time and whilst we don't get -17 here, it was warming the engine very nicely from -6 last week. About 30-45 mins later and the water temperature was 78 degrees C! Bodsys Brake Bible
