The FBH is not used as a pre warming heater, it will only run when the engine is running allowing the engine coolant temperature to rise quicker to heat the interior and reduce emissions during a cold start and warm up.

I'm sure if I was in a place where it got to -17 I would have ordered a remote FBH start by now lol

I understand the above, but won't the heater have it's own emissions? Probably much worse than the RRS engine, but not likely taken into account for the government & brochure's? Ezituper: see below cribbed from Tim:
. Not sure how it applies to petrol vehicles but look under the bonnet and see if it's there! I second the thoughts from Andy K. I live in Sussex but still rate the recently installed remote for my fbh as a joy. Half an hour before I plan to go out I just press the LR button on my key fob. Then finish my morning coffee, go out and start the car (which starts that much easier) and push the fast defrost prog button on my heater. The coolant temperature has risen to the point where the screen immediately starts to clear helped by the heated front and rear screens. Don't get me wrong; it's not Hot. But the water temp gauge does move off its stop. Also side windows start defrosting. And I feel sure it must put less strain on the engine to be asked to start from warm rather than -17c! And just for clarification, the fbh can be on its own as described by Tim above, or it can have a timer controlled start so that you can set it to come on at a set time, or it can be controlled remotely from your key fob. Yeah that's about right I guess if you have a tiny engine (running for a short time), making a massive engine more efficient, it makes sense I don't think it's all about emissions though. Improves reliability and smoothness of the engine |

Well, like Finland, Russia has extremes of temperature and they love the remote units for the Webastos. You will find that with the FBH pre warming the engine, that it will start the engine much much easier than it currently does. Your local indi sounds like he does not know what the Webasto is capable of.... The FBH will be independently started by the controller, it is not like a piston driven engine, it is a pure Fuel Burning Heater, so will fire up easier than an engine will. It definitely does not need the cars engine to be running although it will work normally when the engine starts. I use mine all the time and whilst we don't get -17 here, it was warming the engine very nicely from -6 last week. About 30-45 mins later and the water temperature was 78 degrees C!
