L494 headlights

Is there a way to upgrade the adaptive xenons on a L494? I am not exactly bowled over by their power. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

If the bulbs are old, changing them can make a big difference (don't waste your money on "upgrade" bulbs - standard 4300K ones are best), but otherwise, nothing short of adding aux lamps.

It's ridiculous that the lights of the D3, L320 and L322 are superior to that of the late D4, L494 and L405 - the former provide 9400lm xenon or 6000lm halogen; the latter only 6400lm xenon or 3000lm halogen - saving a little bit of power is more important than seeing where you're going, apparently. Vehicle is <12 months o0ld, it is the nights drawing in that have made me remember the headlights are not the most powerful I have ever had. They were a lot better on my XF. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Bulbs shouldn't be an issue then. You're missing those extra 3000 odd lumens that your XF would also have had. Sad Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I agree, they could be brighter, I noticed a drop in brightness from my FL2 xenons. Replaced them with 6000k ones and they are brighter and whiter then the OEM even though 6000k tend to output less lumens of light.

Wondering if anyone had replaced the Zenon with a LED bulbs as there are some very bright LED units available now, but I think they still may not give the correct beam pattern and also might not even fit unless some changes done to the headlight housing.

No, LEDs aren't suitable. A xenon arc offers the tighest possible focus while an LED offers the worst, before you even consider retrospection where it is impossible to line up the focal point correctly. Wink

Light at 6000K is not so good for vision because of the way our eyes respond to different wavelengths - the bluer light causes more glare and fatigue. The term white is very subjective, because a 6000K bulb will look white in daytime, but is perceived as increasingly blue as light levels drop and the receptors adjust - and there's no benefit to a light that appears whiter than another, so much as one that provides the most useful light, and our eyes manage warmer colours much better. Colour rendering is also generally reduced as you move away from the "native" 4300K. At 6000K light may seem brighter, but it is just a deception - our eyes simply cannot judge brightness well at all, because they have to adapt to changing light levels, so looking bright and offering better vision can be very different things.
