Vibration while driving and metallic sound

Hi guys - hopefully someone will have a clue. Had some large vibration this morning while driving on the m4. Felt like driving over rumble strips. First I thought it was bad road surface, but did it while going slower on a road after. Anyway, got home and turned the engine over. All sounds fine. Decide to take for a mile to see if I can replicate, and sounds now like I have a bag of tin cans rattling under the car middle to rear. Vibration there also.

Any ideas. Looking on here, it could be a propshaft based on my searches. Car has been absolutely fine until this morning.

I would need to get it to rovertune for Tuesday. I don't really want the cost, but am wondering whether I should drive it in, or get it recovered.

What do you think?

An extreme possibility I had on another car, was the Cats had destroyed themselves Whistle and all my metallic noise etc was coming from them, no vibration but it did obviously alter running/emissions etc. Sad
Keep us informed as not read this one on the RRS. Smile
My general thing with any problems is to check on my code reader the IID BT or checked through a LR/RR dealer John

If it's coming from the centre of the car I would say it's the carrier bearing on the prop shaft.

Rear prop costs around £600 (I cant quite remember exactly as it was awhile ago that I changed mine), if you can't change it yourself it should be an hours labour as it's very easy to swap out.

Don't be tempted to buy the bearing alone as they're cheap knock-off bearings that don't last, also you need to split the shaft at the slide so that you can fit the bearing. There is a rubber shield that protects the splines and holds in the grease, this boot invariably splits when separating the shaft.
The seal isn't available to buy separately so it's easier to save yourself the time and effort and do it right once.

I did a quick Google and was getting prices around £600, which I thought was pretty high, but as I said its been awhile since I changed mine so couldn't remember.

Thanks guys. The car was recovered from home today and is at the garage. I await a call on what it is and when they can do it (and also whether the warranty will cough up). Their first thought based on symptoms is prop shaft (or bearings) so let's see.

Hopefully sorted one way or other by end of week. It's amazing how being a car down for a weekend is a real pain in the backside.....

Sorted. Rear prop shaft assembley replaced under warranty 👍🏼 apparently epb had played up too and scored my brake discs so they needed to be replaced to but not covered. At least is done. 2010 TDV8

I would ask to see your old brake disks, I can't see why they would strip your rear hub's when they're replacing the propshaft.. sounds like a quickfit money spinner to me.

Hi, please correct me if i'm wrong but i thought the EPB worked with shoes and rear hubs, nothing to do with the rear discs ?? Rolling Eyes Sounds to me like someone needed a "Few Dollars More" Whistle 2007, HSE, Cairnes Blue, Factory tints, Love it !!!

The EPB brake shoes work in a brake drum in effect machined inside the Rear Disc so how on earth you would see that was damaged with out stripping it out I don't know. I suppose it could have been binding and overheated/damaged the rear discs or something like that but would have thought EPB shoes etc. would have needed replacing as well, it sounds slightly suspect.

Hi Gornal,

The EBP does work with a drum and shoes, but as with most modern cars the rear drum is now integrated into the brake disk.

Apparently one of the clips had perished and had caused the shoes to score the discs (or something like that). Makes sense, as had been making a squeak for some time (now not). To be clear, I asked them to investigate this at the same time.

In any case, I trust the mob at rovertune and am pretty confident that they wouldn't do anything unnecessary. Indeed, rob had my car investigating a fault previously for 2 days and didn't charge me a penny.... 2010 TDV8
