Fuel tank shape

This will really seem like a daft question, and at least will probably give some of you a chuckle, but I have a question about the fuel tank shape in the RRS S/C - is it tapered, so it's smaller at the bottom??

Seriously,
I get about 100 miles from full, to the 3/4 mark. (I think, great 400 miles on a tank!, even though the trip computer range says otherwise)
Then from 3/4 to 1/2, its about 50 miles.
Then 1/2 to 1/4 seems another 40 miles.

What on earth is going on? I don't think I am driving that differently after the first 1/4 tank is gone, perhaps a little harder, but surely not to double fuel consumption.

I admit, when I fuel up, I top it off - so when the pump clicks off, I top it up until I can see the petrol itself. That's about 4 litres, so I theoretically could get another 12-15 miles more with a 'full' tank if you know what I mean.

Anyways, thoughts? Am I going mad? 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.2 s/c with Arden bodykit

I agree the bottom half goes quicker, I expect part of the reason is, if you let the range go to zero, fuel light on for around 40 miles, gauge at nothing, then filled up, you would not get anywhere near 100 litres in, and the tank is meant to be 105!

try it next time

so there is another 15 litres from the bottom half that the gauge knows nothing about...

Mines 88 litre capacity, but yeah I guess the gauge shows empty when there's still fuel. No way I'm going to test that theory though! 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.2 s/c with Arden bodykit

You can test it out if you take a container of PETROL and filler with you.

NOTE : This does NOT apply to injected desiel models.

Interesting that it appears the 5ltr models got extra fuel capacity (88 vs 105ltrs). I will have to check my handbook.

Down here we could do with the extra, given the distances we travel, although I have found fuel economy almost doubles from city driving when you get out in the big wide open country. (where our max. speed limits of 100/110kph apply.)

Opps!!! Re my last post.
I don't know if the RRS petrol versions have an in tank pump. If they have you should not run to empty as you will damage the pump. 2006 4.2 S/C with Tow Pack, Side Steps, DRL's, 19" & 20" wheels, additional 110 ltr Fuel Tank Roof Rack and performance mods.
