I would check that the service history is complete and that it has had all it was due. Now sold 2010 TDV8 Santorini black, lots of extras and best car I ever owned, and there's been a few. I will be back.

See if you can get the garage to give you a warranty of some sort. If not get a quote from either warranty direct or warranty wise and see if they will go 50/50 on the cost.

You are making the correct decision getting it from a dealer. Most dealers will give a few months warranty which will buy you time until you can sort your own.

Within a week of buying the car (and tbh I think the prob was there when we bought it) a YAW sensor failed costing the garage £150 to investigate and £600 from dealer to put right. My car is a 2012 and done 25k with full service history. You just cant tell or guarantee with any car, new or old.

I took a 2yr warranty from the same dealer (large dealer but not LR) for peace of mind.

Sympathise with your angst though. Been there done it. But soooo glad i did it!

Love it. Best car i have ever owned, including some nice Audi's.

Did they sort out the issue where 07 57 cars had the problem where after changing out the cambelts soon after didn't something crack shredding the belts and forcing a few of you to have to get new engines???

Did that get corrected with 08 cars? Was it just a bad batch?

Yes, the oil pump casing would crack throwing out the timing and wrecking the engine.

Try to find out if the oil pump casing was replaced when the belts were changed.

OK if it hasn't been done on an 08 car is this almost certain to crack? The dealer may not know the answer to this that's the trouble.

Did it affect 08 models too or just bad batch of 07 57?

if it hasn't been done then What else do I need to get changed with the cambelt? Please list what I need to change and the approx cost of each item

Think I'm putting myself off after reading so many off putting stories on here.gutted I love the car but just worrying about the engine the electrics bushes and arms have been replaced but also oil pump etc etc

It's a shame but I don't know if I can bring myself to part with £15k and have constant worry afterwards. I'm going to see the car at 3pm today again so will decide then

I don't think you are comparing like with like by asking that question.

I think you should speak to Warranty Direct and negotiate a rate with them and ask the dealer what warranty they can offer. Yes, and no. The new design is certainly stronger, but I don't know that it's 100% infallable after another "105k", but then it can be changed again. Failures have occured outside the weak range which is why it's recommended to change it on all MYs. As long as it's changed, you don't have to worry for a long time, so in that sense, yes, the issue has an effective solution.

There's no recall, because LR refuse to accept the issue publicly, however they have offered large contributions to those with applicable full service history.

An oil pump from LR is circa £200+VAT (price has gone up and up ). Alternatively, if an OE Citroen pump is available that Disco_Mikey is selling at nearer half that price - you'd have to decide if this would be acceptable; while it's an identical pump, it's still not "Genuine". Fitting is an extra couple of hours' labour. It's also recommended to change the water pump (only an extra 5 mins) which adds about £50.

The engine is very reliable and the electrics are generally good too. Once the oil pump is done, it really shouldn't be a worry. Just remember, you hear about all the issues, but you won't see everyone else posting to say their car is running perfectly fine each day. You can always factor in a warranty too, and bear in mind, there are folk like me that are perfectly prepared to run them without one.

As far as said competitor vehicles go, I can't comment personally, but from what I've read from others, they all have their issues just the same.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

If it turns out that the belt gas not been changed then use it as a bargaining tool for discount on the price and then get it done by a reputable indie then at least it will be cheaper and you will have peace of mind that it has been done.
These vehicles are what most of us dream about owning so if you are in a position to be able to afford one then why not.
A warranty is a must !!

Only problem I've had with mine in the year that I've had it, was it would keep coming up with a park brake fault, then it said transmission fault and that only some gears were available. if you tried to move off it would hardly move. This fault didn't happen all the time just most of the time over a period of about 3 days. Until I discovered that the high level brake light in the tailgate spoiler was dodgy and didn't always work. I fitted a new one and the faults have gone.

I'm touching wood like I have OCD here, but so far the car has been faultless (apart from the little glitch above). It drives like a new car and looks like a new car. it only had 42k on when I bought it (its a 2006 model), and has a full service history. I contacted the dealer that had stamped the book all its life, and he told me tales of a severely anal owner who wrapped the car in cotton wool; and did what was needed when it was needed. It shows too, so my advice is make sure it has a good service history and that it has been done when due and not left.

Thats what i found. Me being a perfect example. I looked on here, found out 'some' basics to look our for, then went looking. Found a decent one. Had a small warranty issue - posted it here but not posted any other things about it cos its been good so far so nowt interesting to say about my own. Plenty to say about others though.

Out of 1000's of RRS's sold a tiny percentage of those will come on here to look for a solution to their issue, so you have a very narrow perspective on the cars reliability, totally skewed tbh.

Its like an alien visiting our planet to look at humans but only through all the patient notes at a doctors. If you were to do that, you'd think humans would be very unreliable!

Good luck but don't focus too much on stuff on here.
