Anti-freeze colours

Do any of you know the difference between anti-freeze colours.

I have seen blue, red & green.
I was told a while back that blue was for old cars with steel cylinder heads and red was for aluminium heads.
I have also had people say the difference is in how long they last without being changed. Lot of Landcruisers now sold

The color is a dye - what is more important is to get the correct anti freeze for your car and not to mix different types. Old cars used green ethyl glycol mixed with water. Had to be replaced every 30k miles. Newer cars went with various forms of h-oat and oat (organic acid technology) coolant - which protects aluminum better and lasts longer - with various additives and conditioners depending on the manufacturer. If in doubt , get fluid from the dealer, but this can be expensive. Pentosin has good web site and guide showing different types of coolant for different engines. I have used pentafrost SF in my rover - pink - easily available at auto parts stores - (pink by the way). I would not use so called universal fluids or gm dex cool.

Mix only with distilled water (from auto store or drug store) if coolant needs to be diluted and follow bleed instructions if/as needed.

Hi and thank you for the explination.
I have never used distilled water in my mix but then again I do not have chemicals in my water supply.
First time I have been told that, only use distilled water in the battery.

Hi, I've just recently done a coolant change, I was a bit confused with what to use so I ended up getting from dealer, as said previous it's not the cheapest but peace of mind knowing it's correct, it's orange in colour, I also bought 5L distilled water from halfords it's only few pounds. Thumbs Up

The distilled vs deionised vs tap water matter is a constant source of debate. Some say tap water is fine, as long as it's not overly hard, some say distilled is needed, some say you absolutely musn't use distilled, some say that the pure water will eat away at the metal faster, some say the tap water will cause limescale, some say limescale won't build up as the water isn't constany being renewed, some say light deposits form a protective layer that helps prevent erosion from the flow... Rolling Eyes

I don't think there's any appreciable difference either way when it comes to a car's cooling system. Effects may well be/are observed in other industrial systems, but for cars, I doubt the effects have ever been/can ever be accurately and conclusively measured. Neutral Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I just use the Halfords premixed OAT antifreeze/coolant. Probably cheaper options available but it avoids the issues. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
