Selling my number plate..

After my recent acquisition of my cherished plate, im not looking to dispose of my X7 KAM number plate.
Although wanting to keep it, its a waste of money sitting in a plate really when i could liquidate it and put it towards a KS one instead.. (what i want next..!)

So tried the forums, with no luck. New reg said its worth about £1200 and offered to put it for sale, but with no guarantee of sale, i thought i would have a dig myself. Put it on loot.com (always manage to sell stuff on there!) and bargain pages, for a cool £1000 and got a call this morning.

Right this guy lives in Southall, and owns a business down there.
His name is Harjinder and he says he will give me £1k for the plate, as its his kids name, and he wants to buy it for him (a normal thing for asians to do to be fair - know loads of people who have done it). But he is being cautious and so am i.

The plate is on retention, so it would be just a case of signing it over to him, just like a V5 on a car. However he says, what if when i send that form off, you then claim you've lost the form and get another one back in your name and keep my £1000 cash. We i said, you have no choice really, you have my word that i won't but how can he verify that.

What he is proposing, is to give me £500 cash, up front and £500 cash when the new cert arrives in his name, or £500 cheque on the day, but im not willing to do that, as i don't know him from jack. He said, as im in london on saturday i could meet him at his house and see his household etc and show me he's not dodgy but i just don't trust him 100% as i dont' know him..

If i sign the form over to him, thats it then isn't it.. i think i am at more risk here then him.. so why the hell should i do this.. what do u all reckons, and anyone sold a plate before?

Hi

I have used the following process with any plates I have sold.

Simply fill out Harjinder's details to section 1 of the certificate and sign (purchaser only) section 2. You should send your application to DVLA Personalised Registrations, SV2, Swansea, SA99 1DN together with a cheque made payable to DVLA for £25.

If he's still not happy, offer to post it in front of him after you pocket his £1k 2006 RR SPORT HSE

If this guy is really worried just write out a letter stating that you will sell said plate to him for £x and signed by both of you after you have both produced proof of ID - you might want an independent witness too to be double sure. I think he's being a little OTT but you don't look an honest man! Wink 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Kam, even when form arrives back having put buyer as nominee, you stay the "grantee", i.e it is yours. The buyer is just a nominee, and can be changed if deal falls flat. He only gets the number when it is put on his car, not before. Until then (from memory & having sold a few numbers) he has no rights to the number. You (or he) could then take it to a Vehicle Reg Office & have it transfered (or do it via post). If he wants to keep it on retention for a while, it will still be in your name and if he (or you) do not pay the £25 per year, the number will be lost for good.

Cheers guys.. another one for the archives of sorted queries!

Yeah i have offered to add him as the nominee, and when the certs arrive back to me, i will then meet up with him, and take his £1k cash and give him the form where both his name and my name appear.

If for any reason he changes his mind or whatever, i will then still have the right as the grantee to remove his name (a nominee) from the form and replace my current status as the sole owner of the plate..

If he is still not happy.. he can shuv it up his arse.. however im not being overrun with offers, so im willing to accomodate him on this..

H8 OAG/derek, thanks for the info also, very precise and obviously from experience (which is what i was looking for to be honest).. i am the off topic random question king, which you'll soon see, when i come back to pick ur brains about something else!

Its what i call networking consultancy.. having people from various backgrounds on tap on ur desktop with their opinions and experiences there and ready.. I feel i input to this as much as i can, with my random exploits and my random comments.. but again, thanks.. keep it coming!!

If your plate has an "Asian Name" connotation you might want to target a few KAMS in the online phone directory or shove it on ebay? 2006 RR SPORT HSE
