Buying a surprise car for Christmas

I'm planning on getting Mrs P a car for Christmas but don't want her to know anything about it until the big day.
We were planning on changing it next year anyway so I've managed to get the private plate off her current car, gave her some b.s. about the closure of local DVLA offices resulting in longer turn arounds.....

The only obstacle that I can see is insurance. As she'll be the registered keeper and insurance policy holder I can't see her current insurance company updating her policy if I phone in with the new car details.
I think I'm correct in thinking that my insurance which covers me to drive other vehicles isn't sufficient.
I was planning on collecting the car Christmas Eve then leaving at my parents until the next day.

So, has anybody done this and how did you overcome the insurance issue.

Thanks

Some insurance companies can make critical changes by the spouse not sure if that's change of cars but beat to ask, I'm sure your not the first to do it.

Also some dealers provide 7 days free insurance Idea

You can change insurance details anytime you wish. Just give the insurance company the time and date you want it to change over. They will also cover you for both the vehicles at the same time if you need a weeks chage over for example. Just give them a call and tell them your situation.

You could always get temp 24 hour insurance from somewhere (I think I paid ~£25 for the day when I was planning to pick up a car that was 180 miles away but all depended what it was like in the flesh).

You could put it in your misses name as you'll know (or I hope, for your sake! Laughing Razz ) the DoB and other details etc.

Cheers..

Ian

Are you buying new? Most dealers offer free 7 day cover (usually with a not so attractive excess) so that could tide you over? ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Yes agree with BC we are collecting a new car on Sat for SWMBO and I did not want to change the insurance until the old ones has been collected (contract hire) so the dealer gives you a phone number and a dealer code, you call them up and give them the date of collection and viola all insured for 7 days from collection. Will give you time to change it over between Christmas and new year. The only think they ask in return is you give them the end date of your current policy so they get a chance to quote you in the future. Most main dealers and car sales have this facility .... Just ask. 2011 RRS 3.0TDV6 HSE Santorini Black, black leather, 22" Calibre Altus black / polished wheels, full colour coded.

Don't forget, you will have to tax the vehicle before you pick it up, so make sure your insurance is in place in plenty of time for it to be recoginised on the national computer before you can tax it. Wink I'm not sure how long it takes to get on to the database.
