Was having a conversation with local garage when having some work done recently, who are convinced you will get a better mpg from using higher grade petrol/diesel such as Shell, BP etc. as opposed to using supermarket fuel.

I have not put it to the test as yet, but does anyone agree with this statement??

I would agree with them, I run the s/c on shell fuel as I have with all my cars the biggest change in consumption and performance was my wrx Subaru , I'd say it makes a difference and the cost is not worth worrying about.

Oh yes. Shell for me but I'm sure BP would be as good. Since I've started looking into it I have even got my wife on it with her car.

Asdas finest and a drop of 2 stroke is as good as any fuel you can buy.....

The only reason to deviate from this would be if you had a dpf fitted.

The fuel is the same it is just the additive, now if it were petrol that is a completely diffrant kettle of fish,
As it's all about resisting detonation for more power less fuel.

Been running my sport on shell V Power from new. 21500 miles now, I wouldn't run it on anything else.

My s/c shows 21 mpg on a run using shell

When I first joined this forum I'd seen a lot of posts saying this. But in a lot of asking and researching I've found that the diesel we buy here in Northern Ireland is the same stuff in every pump. The only difference is the additives they mix in for each container.

So if you really want to get a better mpg use a third party fuel additive at every 50 litre fill. That way you are actually using a better mix than you find at the pump and you can buy the so called supermarket .

At least this is true for northern Ireland. I'm not so sure about you boys.
but interested to find out. It seems the extra mpg comes directly from the fuel treatment. Not the affect it has on cleaning etc... I'd also be tempted to hear more on terraclean success stories. 

Thats a very interesting post Designboy. I have no knowlegde of better or worse diesels in the Uk, only what I have been advised.

Hopefully some more replies will be posted from more knowlegeable members.

I filled up yesterday and didnt know whether to stick with Tesco or BP across the road. I went with Tesco this time as i had 10p per litre off and 2p per litre less than BP, and therefore saved myself £9.12 on the 76 litres of diesel fill. Thats not to say i wouldnt change though if it was detrimental to the running of the car.

If what you say is correct I am more than happy to utilise an additive every time I fill up. What do you recommend Designboy for diesel?

Millers seems to be the forum fav here mate. I use it exclusively on each fill. I've a v8 diesel and it gives me around 26mpg on normal runs and 31 on motorway.

^^^^ Judging by what it is used for, i don't see why people don't just use a premium fuel like V power +. It works out cheaper in the long run anyway.

I'd be interested Andy in the real world costs to do both, It says that its treats 10x 50 litre fills, so that means it is basically £1 per fill of 50 litres.

I eat through roughly 50 litres per week in day to day running.

Quick maths:

£62.95 to fill 50 litres with the cheap stuff + £1 to treat
or
£67.50 to fill with the V power or equivalent fuel

That costs


52.1775 weeks per year at £64 = £3339.36
or
52.1775 weeks per year at £67.50 = £3521.98
