I was looking for 20" winters a few weeks ago but had no luck here. If like me you decide to give up waiting and go for new tyres instead, I found best price for Vredesteins at www.tyreleader.co.uk . Beat everyone else by a decent margin (even cheaper now Big Cry). Very good service too. Responded to my questions about tyre age etc. quickly.

PS: No affiliation with tyreleader, just a happy customer.

Thanks fkarim, that is a great recommendation and I am about to give up. I really appreciate this as the price of news tyres here is not so bad.

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

If I was looking for a purely road tyre I'd just go for the Pirelli Scorpion Verde AllSeason. No need for two sets of wheels/tyres and performance in winter conditions that would be good enough for most road users.

Standard fit on new FFRR and others I believe. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

This was triggered mainly by my insurance company that insist on us having the snowflake symbol on the tyres for a trip to the Alps this winter. I convinced myself, rightly or wrongly, that the extra costs I am incurring now are offset by my eight tyres lasting longer. I will also have 20" for summer and 19" for winter as I have two sets of wheels and I know from my farm upbringing that the more tyre the better for softer conditions.

myfirstrrs have you sorted snow chains if you're off to the Alps? I believe you are still required to carry them despite having winter tyres and a 4x4. If the weather is too snowy going up the mountains, I have read the French Police stop cars and check if they are carrying snow chains. For this reason I am also looking for snow chains. The type that is suitable for SUVs with limited suspension/brake clearance like ours seems good. Again, tyreleader has the best price for such chains compared to eBay and everywhere else. Haven't bought them yet though.

Hell no but I must check this out. Do you need four or just on one axle and if so which one? I will start by asking around if I can borrow or hire them. Tyreleader has them from £63 and upwards. This is going to be an expensive ski holiday.

Think front axle only but I'm no expert and haven't properly explored this one yet. Tyreleader has the "limited clearance, automatic tensioner" ones for 275/40/20 tyres for £232 per axle. I haven't made up my mind about getting the cheapest ones if they are just for satisfying the police or getting the more expensive chains that won't damage any brake/suspension components if I actually need to use them. I'm hoping Vredesteins and terrain response should be enough to keep me going but you never know.

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

Myfirstrrs..... went through this a couple of years back, I had a tdv8 with non-winter 20" tyres.....bought second hand 19"s with wintracs off a forum member to simplify changes etc......the 19"s have never had any issue with grip on snow and ice covered mountain roads on the way up or down from any of the resorts (even without chains, terrain response truly is witchcraft !). Done about 15kmiles......still well legal and still very grippy (braking and moving off) at the end of the last winter season....remember that they are not going to help if you drive like a nob as physics cannot bend to keep a weighty truck on the road if you take an off-camber hairpin at 40 on sheet ice...wear levels will increase if you leave them on in warmer months...

Whether to take chains is a balance of personal choice, legal requirement and likelihood of needing them. low resorts have less likelihood of you needing them........if it is bad you might be told to fit them or turn around (I have been waved through without chains in heavy snow once winter tyres were confirmed, but this is not a guarantee).

Surprisingly there is no legal rule about which axel, but that makes sense if you think about rear drive cars....snow chains on the rear are good for getting moving, but not helpful when turning (speed is more a factor there)

I don't do many miles in the uk, so don't really think they are truly necessary in the flat south where I live. but I understand why others go for them......my 20"s were fine for sitting in UK traffic during snow when 99% of non 4x4s were clogging up the a3 on a slight hill ....even chains don't help when a road is blocked by immobile cars...

I bought traditional maggi chains for the rear wheels (no clearance issues) to be legal/protect an expensive truck and took the view that a gentle right foot would help give the front end a chance given the electric wizardry. I've had no issues with the traction system fitting them on the rear.

As an Alternative, there are places that rent the spike spider style ones relatively cheaply that work well on the front and protect alloys in good condition (spiders are much the same as the land rover gold priced ones).

Practice fitting them Before you go....

Sorry for the long reply, hopefully this is useful.....other may have a different view....

Ps, get a sanef toll road tag for the drive, just makes life easier....and enjoy the roadtrip, you'll have the biggest grin on your face in the first deep snow covered resort car park you find !

Many thanks fkarim and G2 for your constructive comments. After checking the AA and RAC websites for the rules regarding driving in the Alps, and taking into account that this car cost me a small furtune I decided that I would get some snow chains. It just turned out that just two hours later the below chains were finishing on ebay:

http://www.rangeroverpartsstore.co.uk/snow...w0080.html

I threw enough money at them to win them and I am now the proud owner of an unused Landrover Snow Traction System suitable for an RRS. Whether I will ever fit them in anger or not I have no idea but I think that I am as well prepared as I could be.

Next step is to get the 19" tyres to accompany my 19" landrover rims. Tyreleader does seem to be best with unfitted prices from £109 to £227, Pirelli's XL being £142 and Michellin's £158 and the popular Vredestein £153.

Hence, I am asking if there is a particular tyre that forum memebrs would steer me away from or direct me to and I will hopefully by sure footed as a goat on the hills. Driving slowly of course.
