2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Bali Blue
Coil-overs v. airbags

I've just seen a RRS with coil-overs instead of airbag suspension! Apart from the lack of adjustability, is there any advantage? The RRS seemed to be at "Access" height and was running on 22's, the combination of which I suspect would give quite a firm ride!

Wish I'd taken a picture of it now but any thoughts?

Scotland 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 SE Santorini Black

Was it a run of the mill RRS, or a Bowler?
Take away the air suspension and you take all the advantages of the ride quality and adjustability off road, you would only fit coil overs if you wanted great handing on the road/track I would think, and it would cost a fortune to boot! Nothing surprises me these days, as more and more youngsters are buying them and primping them to the hilt!

Cheers

Oman 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange

Spring conversions are quite common in the Middle East. It started with the Range Rover Classics, Then the P38s. Almost all Classics and numerous P38s here have been converted as I found out when trying to buy one... The Sports are less common however I have seen them here.

As Codfather says, the ride must be compromised, however, they do it out of cost and reliability reasons here. You don't want to get stuck in the dessert with a knackered EAS...

I believe the kits cost about USD1,000 which compared to USD1,500 for a compressor here is why people do it. In the UK I can't see the reason....

Cheers

It was an older V6 diesel! Sat very low on its springs! I assume they'd had trouble with the airbag system; however, they may have just wanted the lower stance look!

My work colleague reckons that the ride doesn't necessarily have to be rock hard if the correct spring rates are chosen!

Very common upgrade/downgrade on Disco 2 and to be honest, drive a couple of these without issue. Wouldn't be my choice of upgrade and at £2300 plus fitting and set up, expensive alternative to leaky bag or faulty pump. My Fullfat runs 22's and lowered air suspension in attempt to make it handle less like jelly but just leaves it hard and "flat eric'd". If you could run a sport in access mode it would look spot on Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

The original air suspension system suffered from having exposed airbags I believe. This meant they got damaged off road. Also they were fitted to solid axles. This limited articulation. Coil overs can be set up to dislocate the spring giving massive articulation. This is popular on tricked D1 and D2 as well as Defenders.

Fitting coil overs on a RRS seems to be pointless. No obvious benefit but the loss of ride comfort and height adjustment on-the-fly. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I've fitted a couple of kits to both D2's and P38's and in both cases the ride was good, but ! Have heard of people having insurance issues with P38's. D2's on most models come with coils as standard from the factory so to change from air to coil is no problem as it's just a conversion. P38's never had coils fitted so changing to coils is a mod.
I dred to think what the insurance would be for a modded D3/RRS.. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current
