RRS 2005 Battery....Please help!!!!!

Hi,

Got a RRS 2005 and havent driven it in months due to not being around driving ban for 6months. Now i'm back to start driving and when I try starting the car, it wont start which i believe is due to the battery gone flat. I do start up the car say every 2weeks for 10-20mins but now thinking should I get the battery re-charged or changed to a new one as when I connect a jumper cable to another car, it starts after charging for about 5mins

Problem is since the car battery is old and i do get the HDC warning light when i try to start the car after charging for minutes.

Varta
12V
90Ah
950 AMPS
150RC
YGD500130 part no.

I went to LR and they gave me a quote of £212 (blimey) for a new car battery but the part no. the guy at LR listed was LR033179 so not sure if I should get the exact battery from here http://www.jaglanduk.com/index.php/home/de...ts/flypage|ask/45-12v-950-amp-90ah-rc150-varta-car-battery.html?sef=hcfp which is exactly what I have now in the car and cheaper at £69.80.

So thinking if i'm going the route of new battery, then get those new AGM battery and is there any issues getting this spec below?

90 to 110Ah
950 AMPS

Thanks

If you can get access to a C-Tek charger you could try the battery on a reconditioned charge to see if that brings it back, but if you have an ordinary charger it would take a couple of days charge to charge it up fully, just running the car for 5 or 10 mins does not do anything to the battery if its flat you would need a good few hours driving to charge it up.

If you go for a new battery get the new AGM one they cost more but are miles better.

Flack Thumbs Up

Hi, thanks for the reply. If i get the normal standard ones, does it really matter given that Land Rover wants me to pay £250 for the AGM type and my car is not a start/stop engine.

Really need to get the battery replaced as i had to call RAC to come and charge the battery up after getting fuel in the car at a filling station and refuses to start!!!

Probably be worth getting the £70 battery. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Not too sure about the 2005 cars but certainly the later ones have a charge control unit that adjusts alternator output voltages for different temperatures and thus battery charging rates. Consequently making sure the battery you fit is fully compatible with the OE spec is important as there is a suggestion that incompatibility can lead to premature alternator failure.

I believe seeing in the workshop manual that recalibration can be required - but I'll need to check.

RRS 2005 Battery..Please help (90Ah/950Amps)(100Ah/900Amps!

Thanks, exactly what I'm trying to avoid by getting under or over spec model.

The current installed battery is a Varta 12V, RC150, 950AMPS, 90Ah with LR parts no. YGD500130 which i believe is the old parts no. and the new one I got from LR is LR033179 which is the new AGM type battery for £250 and when i checked the spec online its 850 CCA 90Ah
http://www.steveparkers.com/lr032260-batte...30213.html

RAC recommended RAC Exide Premium Car Battery R1-017 (019) which is 100Ah, 900AMPS for £134.99 with 5years warranty.

Anyone with RRS 2005/06 and recently changed battery lately, pls advise the type you got and bear in mind, the winter season is coming and most cars will have issues with flat battery.

Thinking of getting the RAC and they will come and fit it. If anything does happen to battery, atleast got warranty and they are the one who will fit it.

And also looking at getting the one from Europarts which i believe is the same as RAC recommended only that RAC used their label.
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Land+Rov...mp;cc5_999

Exide Premium Battery 017. Part No.: 444770176
Amp Hours: (Ah): 100Ah
Cold Cranking Amp: (CCA): 900CCA

Will having 100Ah & 900AMPs instead of 90Ah & 950AMPS have any side effect on the alternator or car? Quick advise is needed as I need to get new battery in the morning.

Thanks

For what its worth the bit in the workshop manual I remembered says ....

"The Generator has a multifunction voltage regulator for use in a 14V charging system with 6÷12 zener diode bridge rectifiers.
The ECM monitors the load on the electrical system via PWM signal and adjusts the generator output to match the required load.
The ECM also monitors the battery temperature to determine the generator regulator set point. This characteristic is necessary to protect the battery; at low temperatures battery charge acceptance is very poor so the voltage needs to be high to maximize any rechargeability, but at high temperatures the charge voltage must be restricted to prevent excessive gassing of the battery with consequent water loss.

The Generator has a smart charge capability that will reduce the electrical load on the Generator reducing torque requirements, this is implemented to utilize the engine torque for other purposes. This is achieved by monitoring three signals to the ECM: Generator sense (A sense), measures the battery voltage at the central junction box (CJB).

Generator communication (Alt Com) communicates desired Generator voltage set point from ECM to Generator.
Generator monitor (Alt Mon) communicates the extent of Generator current draw to ECM. This signal also transmits faults
to the ECM which will then sends a message to the instrument pack on the CAN bus to illuminate the charge warning lamp."

drdelrrs, thanks for your comment but must admit have no clue what about all the technical details but do get what you are trying to say. so in short there is a mechanism which sort of step up/step down voltage depending on temp and also sends a warning signal/faults to CAN bus.

So wud you recommend I get the europart/RAC battery which is 100Ah and 100CCA? The new AGM LR wants to sell is 90Ah and 850CCA and current battery is 90Ah 950CCA

Thanks

Hi Skilachi

I can't give you a definite.

I can say is that I once bought a TDV8 which had a non-LR higher capacity battery fitted when I took delivery; the dealer changed it and a few days later also had to change the alternator which had given up!! All done under warranty so no problem for me but the technician told me that they are 'matched' items.

It might be a bit of bulls..t or not I can't say but given the choice for the extra cost I'd buy an LR battery and avoid wondering - just a personal view and there will be plenty of members on here who've had no trouble with non-standard products.
