There doesn't seem to be any one oil that has been identified as the best. The important thing is that it meets the required specification. In fact there are oils with specifications that exceed those given in the owner's handbook since the technology has moved on. For the record I'm using Mobil Super 3000 x1 Formula FE 5W30. Not saying this is the best just a suitable choice. Handily it comes in 5 litre packs and you need 10 litres for a change.

The most important thing of course is changing it often; 7,000 miles or every six months to try and avoid oil sludging and the dreaded turbo failure. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks for the reply paddi, was wondering about how much oil as one data book said 9.5 litres but owners man says 5.85 which is what the v6 takes. Thinking I've got the wrong man or there's a supliment somewhere I've not yet found..

Regards Ian

Yes I noticed that error in the manual too. In practice, after a thorough drain you will get a little over 9.5 litres in. Wonder how many TDV8s have been damaged by following the manual and underfilling?
You'll find the same problem if you ever want to do a coolant change - the owners manual says 12 litres for a refill and the workshop manual 13.7 litres. Rolling Eyes

If you are doing the oil change yourself you'll need to order two LR sump plugs which are only about £2 each IIRC as they are not reusable. In case you haven't already seen it there are a few useful titbits of information in this thread: http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic27697....il+change.

Hope it all goes well Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thumbs Up
Not sure why there are two but one may be something to do with the turbo oil feed and if that's true then it's important to drain it. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
