Rough idle on 2009 RRS 3.6 tdv8

Hi everyone.

I have a 2009 RRS 3.6 TDV8 with 75,000 km.

It performs faultlessly in all regards except one.

When you start it, it idles extremely smoothly, but after 10 to 20 seconds it settles into a rough idle, shaking the steering wheel and being felt through the seats.

If you stop and turn off the ignition and then restart it sometimes starts smoothly again, before going into its rough idle, and sometimes it will restart and immediately go into its rough idle.

Your collective wisdom and knowledge on possible causes and remedies would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Peter from Australia

Thank's for replies so far.

What is the best diagnostic tool to get for this model?

Also, since first post, problem seems to be getting worse. eg happening nearly all the time.

It still starts with a perfect idle first thing in the morning and then between 10 and 40 seconds drops into its rough idle.

Would a diagnostic tool show if it was the egr valves?

Also can the egr valves, linkages etc be lubricated from the outside?

Is it a difficult job to replace the egr valves?

regards, Peter

mine used to do this so i bought some egr valve cleaner, you can take the 2 black pipes that go to the throttle body off and spray the cleaner in while reving the engine at 2-3 thousand revs, give it a try as replacing the egr valve on a tdv8 is a big job , i have the launch dia gun which came up with codes for egr on mine

Hi Cossiedave,

thanks for your reply. Which 2 black pipes are you talking about? Are they the elbows that are attached to the aircleaner near the MAF sensors? Any pictures?

Regards, peter

Hi all,

I have take vehicle to an independent specialist. He put the diagnostic test ester on, it had some 12 miscellaneous faults show up, cleared all of them and then went for a 10 minute drive. Come back and connected diagnostic tester. All clear, but rough idle still there. Put the egr cleaner through as suggested at 2000 rpm, unfortunately made no difference. His only thoughts where to suggest a smoke test on inlet system, looking for leak, or possible faulty injector.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Only difference from first post is it is idling rough more times than smoothly now.

Regards, peter

TDV8 ROUGH IDLE JUDDER COLD

I have a 2010 rr sport done 157000, full genuine Land Rover servicing by myself as I work for main dealer.

I have tried all but a few items now to resolve the slight judder/ misfire sensation when the car is only cold on start up.

Here is my shopping list already done and tested out so far people: ps all genuine parts

2 new mass air flow meters
2 map sensors
2 top turbo hoses
2 turbo Actuator checks all ok
2 turbo to inter cooler side bore scope camera checks for oil all ok
2 turbo out out shafts checked for play when exhaust was off all ok
2 throttle bodies
2 egr valve head checks all ok
2 rocker cover checks all ok
1 new crank case breather replaced
1 oil filter iand oil of castrol magnatec 5w 30 A5
All fluids drained gear box sump pan and replaced with lr parts and lr oils

Well that's about it, apart from if I put my ear to the drivers wheel arch it makes more of a bop bop bop noise than the
Passenger side.

No dtc's logged in sdd just a chatter noise with the misfire also.

Has anyone repced the timing chains yet cause that's my next job and its BIG!
