I can't make my mind up!!

Just need to sound off a little here as the wife is no use in helping me decide..

Ok I'm ready to get back into the land rover brand, god knows why as its been the most unreliable brand I've owned.

I need one that my 4ft 11" wife could drive/handle/park, tow my 1.5 ton caravan (all can do this), carry the kids and dog in comfort, look nice.

I've had a full fat before and loved it even though it let me down loads.

1) 2.7 sport 05, cheap tax, ok mpg, looks nice but no v8 sound.

2) 3.6 sport 08, more tax, less mpg than 2.7, got the v8 sound.

3) discovery 3 2.7 05, 7 seats, cheap tax, little less mpg than sport, no v8 sound.

4) discovery 4 3.0 7 seats, more tax, can't find mpg but sport 3.0 is good.

5) full fat 3.6, more tax, mpg low,

6) 3.0 sport 2010, best mpg (i think), not sure on sound

Now I know noone is going to say disco or full fat but I'm been honest for my 20k budget they are all on the list ( apart from the disco 4 and 3.0 sport which I'd maybe stretch to but don't really want to).

I've listed the mpgs/tax to show pro's and cons (I've done insurance quotes on all of them too and there is not much between them). As you can see I've not managed to trim many off the list.

I'm sold on having a sport as I've had the full fat, disco is not as nice to drive but the 7 seater would be good.

The wife likes the disco best, like the 7 seat option too, I'm not really bothered about 0-60 or bhp etc as that's not what it for (I have motorbikes for that)

I'm pretty sure most are going to suggest to get what they have but try be unbiased.

I'll take a stab at this and say you should do a comparison chart and score each vehicle on it's merits for you and your wife.

You will need to weight the scoring to reflect the importance of the category though.

So joint categories would be:

Capital Cost
Fuel Efficiency
Overall space (luggage, dogs children)
No. of Seats - 0 points for 5 seats and 1 point per additional seat so RRS 0, LR3/4 2.

Maybe score capital cost and mpg out of 10, Overall space out of 5 and seats as mentioned

Then you have your individual preferences to score

For you:

Drivers space
V8 sound
Towing capacity
Gadgets/ specification (sound system, SatNAv, PTI, etc)
Looks

Scores out of 5

Then for your wife:

Driveability
Gadgets/ specification (sound system, SatNAv, PTI, etc)
Looks

Also scores out of 5 Wink

Then just add up the totals and you have the vehicle best suited to your needs Smile I presumed as you've listed different specs and model years that colours and specs are different as you have sourced/ located individual vehicles

You can get more technical by pro rata calculations on cost, mpg. etc. by giving 10 (or 5) points to the cheapest/ most fuel efficient and then dividing the cheapest/ most fuel efficient value by the other cars respective values and multiplying by 10 (or 5) to give you a score.

For example, the cheapest car costs GBP15,000. It therefore gets 10 points. Another car costs GBP19,500 so its scores: 15,000/19,500x10= 7.7. Same goes for mpg.

There you go should keep you busy for a while Laughing

Cheers

By listing all these pros and cons sounds like a practical rather than emotional process.

Would think Disco 3 will hold value best, with new shape RRS about prices are already dropping. Disco 4 about 1 mpg better than D3 and doubt you will get one £20,000

A freelander will do all you want and will on basic running costs fuel insurance tax over about 12,000 miles will save you around 1,800 to 2,000 grand a year. NO V8 sound and a smaller grin factor, but rumoured to be pretty reliable Now driving a rather smart looking Van

I agree listing options does take out the buying with the heart part but buying with the heart I'd be sat in a supercharged one, then wallet says oh dear!!!

Don't like the freelander at all, been to look at evoques but for 30k it just doesn't do enough for me, it looks nice but only in 3 door.

Yeah I was going to have to stretch that 20k to about 25/26k for a disco 4 but if its worth the extra as its more reliable with the 3.0 engine then it might be worth it. Which is why the sport 3.0 got looked at (also I like he dash in the 2010 one better.

I'm not that keen on the disco 3 dash but I could live with it, the disco 4 dash is loads better. I like all the rest.
When the car budget goes up another budget has to come down.

I've had 2 FL2's and both me and my wallet loved them but never towed with them - Npinks can vouch for towing though Bow down

I looked at D3 but was not keen on interior and no need for 7 seats now - was tempted by D4 this time round but in the end I preferred the styling and ride on RRS but it was a close thing Confused

I would go for No 6 as I had one for 3 years and towed a 1600kg twin axle with no effort Cool Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

The way i see it, is if you get the Disco, you will always wish that you got the sport. Thumbs Up If you get the 3.6 V8, you wil wish that you had got the 3.0L. I know its going to push your budget to the boundry but, its better to get the right vehicle in the first place. If you get the 3.0L I doubt you will wish that you had purchased any of the others. It seems to me that you need to tick the box of a sport. Thumbs Up I'm not knocking any of the other vehicles in your choice, we all have certain vehicles to suit our needs. Good luck with whatever you decide. Thumbs Up

Having owned a V6 and v8 there is no question that the V8 tows and goes the best. But they seem to have more than fair share of problems. As Ady said, stretch to a 3.0. Now driving a Fullfat TDV8 and its pants compared to the Sport and it rusts..... Shocked Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

I'm impressed with the responses.

The 3.0 interior is nice but at 26/27k I could have a cheaper sport and 10k in my pocket for repairs, unless the 3.0 is never going to break as then ill be even Smile

Seriously though is the 3.0 better for reliability?

Plus the wife is pretty new to driving, had her license ages just never used it as I love driving.

Simple1 its your thread that's put a big x at the side of the tdv8 ha ha I know there is loads of rr owners out there that are trouble free.

I'd go along to a dealership along with the wife and test drive the models your are seriously intrested in. Thats the only way you and your other half will make you own minds up. Its easy for us to say get this one, not that one. Laughing At the end of the day, its your money, you could have many more thousands of ££££'s in your pocket if you bought something totally different to a land rover product, but that box will still be left unticked. Sad

By the time the 3.0 came out, LR had sorted many of the issues. Cars are mechanical entity so by nature, go wrong. Whatever you buy, do not buy without a comprehensive warrenty that covers all the bits that will put your financial lights out if you had to pay out from your own pocket.
Go test driving and when you find something, come back to the forum with it before you sign in dotted line in case it's a known problem child!!!!! Whistle 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
