Harsh gear changes

Put car in for a health check.... they said got harsh gear changes.... could last a day or months!!! New gearbox needed so they said

I have noticed it kind of hunts for a gear sometimes... and when cold lumps into gear slightly when cold in lower gears... fine on downchanges.... odd up change knocks in but sometimes never even notice... get slight judder too, but if i give it more gas it goes away! sometimes when i overtake foot down it jumps into 6th really fast and then even in manual wont let me change down
but like i said more of the time esp in higher gears its smooth as!
I have had it reset before
Dunno if they talking crap or?

Has it ever had a transmission oil change? Might be worth trying that followed by clearing the gearbox "adaptives". 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

It's certainly well overdue for a transmission filter and oil change. Worth a try considering the huge cost of a new autobox.

How about this for a strategy?: Take it to a 'proper' transmission specialist and get them to change the gearbox sump (has integral filter) and fill with fresh oil (ideally drain and refill twice) and reset the adaptations. Should cost about £350 ish. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

There are a couple of places advertising "mega flush" but in order to do that they need to cut pipes (the LR install of the gearbox doesn't have a built-in flush system). The normal way is to drain the oil, change the sump (which contains the filter), run the box and then change the oil again I believe. I had this done by an indie for £190 all in. http://www.iawa4x4.co.uk/

You might need to go to a dealer to get the adaptives cleared although some indies can probably do it too. I did mine recently using my IIDTool.

It certainly sounds like having the fluid changed is a good first step for your gearbox based on its age/mileage. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Sweet the £190 sounds good... plus randomly i have 3 litres of the gearbox super expensive oil so might save me a few quid!

They done yours all ok then?? Why did you have yours done can i ask? Plus im moving near luton so aint a million miles away

Do they do that other sump you can buy i have seen around? Forget what its called!
Will defo try that route soon... gearbox bathed in nice new oil! Fingers crossed works!

I had mine done at c.60k miles as a general maintenance / precaution item. I'm thinking of getting it done every couple of years in the future.

Mine had the sump plate replaced with the standard plastic item. I'm sure that they'd do the metal version if you asked. Not sure about the price difference.

I've only used that place for the transmission oil change so far. He did mine as the first job of the day (I arranged it a bout 3 weeks before). I dropped the vehicle off, popped to an "American diner" on the industrial estate for breakfast. Job done in a couple of hours. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Go for it. That is an amazing price considering the plastic sump is £81 retail and the 12 litres of auto fluid for a double flush at the average retail price for ZF Lifeguard would be £240. Shocked

I've had transmission specialists tell me that if an auto gearbox is on the way out then the only thing that is keeping it working is all the metal particles in the fluid providing the necessary friction and so if the fluid is renewed the gearbox 'dies'.
I'm tempted to think this is just one of those 'urban myths' and that what is really happening is that when a gearbox is already worn out changing the fluid doesn't help and so it just happens to fail completely shortly afterwards. But willing to hear from someone who knows better Laughing 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Yes definitely. Lots of threads to show that a fluid change can make all the difference. Had mine done and it definitely improved things. Still have a minor issue but that's another story.... 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I had mine changed and it didn't seem to do much. When I cleared the adaptives in the gearbox there was a noticeable improvement in gearbox performance. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
