Until it breaks down and costs twice as much as most cars to fix Rolling Eyes

No more than other cars of similar types - so no not really

Also Land Rovers are well known for being able to source parts cheaper than many other makes - so again i wouldnt buy that its especially expensive either Mike

Quick update. Spoke to the dealer and they genuinely didn't know about the repair (pretty sure they would have just thrown away the invoice if they did!)

Had it for a full day and did about 70 miles in it. The vibration has disappeared so I think that might have just been the tyres from being stood on a forecourt. Drives perfectly, and more research suggests the repair is actually the front splitter and fog light.

So I've negotiated a remap rather than money off the car, as I think it could just benefit from slightly more urgency and pickup. They are a RR specialist (the one I'm buying is at the cheaper end of what they sell), but I'm going to clarify that its a map that can be removed if it needs to go in for warranty work (as it has 18 months left).

I've been deliberating all night on whether to go for the diesel or the Supercharged, which is also a HSE rather than the SE of the diesel, but when I start putting in the fuel economy into a calculator the costs can quickly spiral so I'm going to stick with the more sensible option (I have a bike for when I want proper acceleration anyway!)

Thanks for the help - will post some photos when I pick it up on tuesday Smile

I think you can now:

I don't think this is the company they are using, but an interesting take on the warranty situation:

Will an ECU Remap invalidate my cars warranty?
No! All codes and diagnostics that a dealer read when going in for a service or diagnostics will remain exactly the same. We say it with confidence because of the rigorous testing regime all remap files go through. In addition to this, it is illegal for a vehicle manufacturer to void your warranty because work has been carried out by a third party under the EU block exemption laws. This also covers vehicle tuning and engine remapping as long as the failure is not as a direct cause of the remap for which you can trust Viezu's written tuning files. We can also say with confidence no JFA tuning remap has ever caused a single failure and we are recognised as supplying some of the best tuning files in the world, to back this we offer our customers 100% peace of mind that our files are fully insured to two million pounds by RSA Insurance!

Still, it does seem a grey area at best Confused

In my opinion buy an RRS is like overtaking - if in doubt don't.

Why bother with any concerns that may reside in the back of your mind?

There are plenty of cars around, and summer will bring a few more on to the market at lower prices.

Sag, as you say the warranty is a grey area, if your turbo's go pop, who do you think will pay for new ones? If L/R reflash your ecu which they often do due to updates, you will lose your modified map, as mapping your model requires taking out your ecu and mapping it on the bench, do you really want to be doing this with your motor everytime you take it to the dealers Shocked If your dealer suspects that you have had your motor remapped and you have a failure due to this which your mapper will argue the toss till the cows come home that it wasn't his fault, your dealer or L/R WILL void your warranty, L/R have spent millions in research to get these motors where they are today, do you honestly think that they would allow joe bloggs to undo all their research and tinker around with the ecu just to gain more power and still validate their warranty Question Its been know before for many manufacturers to void warranties due to such modifications. Its all about proving who's fault it is should you have a failure and i think you will find its the one with the deepest pockets that will win. No disrespect to you, but i don't think it will be you on this occasion.

hhmm, ok, sounds like I need to think the remap through a bit first. I didn't realise that the LR dealer may just update the map themselves and over write it.

Thanks for the advice

Some mappers are prepared to put the modified map back on for free should it get wiped, might be worth asking your mapper if he offers this service. Thumbs Up

Land rover are very clear a remap invalidates your warrant, if like me, your warranty is important, leave it. On the standard map Mike

Ok, I may need to get friendly with the command shift! I used it a bit on the test drive and found I could just tap on of the paddles to activate it, but to put it back into 'D' do you just have to move the stick left and then right? I found from a proper stop, eg at traffic lights, take off was fine, but from a momentary stop or just crawling at low speed there was a bit of a delay. Not sure if this is gearbox lag or turbo lag.

Anyone with a moderate amount of computer knowledge and cheap technology can produce remaps and remapped 'chips'.

The whole area of remapping a car while its under manufacturers warranty (and probably the same for aftermarket warranties) is that they will all assume its at manufacturer's spec.

So any time it needs work it is possible that the remap will be 'discovered' and, of course, the bigger the bill the more likely they won't pay.

In addition insurers are increasingly wriggling by using the small print and widening the definition of 'modified'. If, (admittedly very rare and low risk), you car was involved in a prang and needed to be recovered to a dealership etc and the remap was then revealed and had not been reported to the insurers you could be out in the cold and exposed to some serious costs.

Any remap needs to be fully thought through and should only be from a highly reputable company who offer a full warranty.

Yeah, I've decided against the remap.

Pick the car up tomorrow afternoon - looking forward to it, especially as I have a 300 mile drive on thursday to look forward to!
