Which engine is best for LPG conversion - 4.4 V8 or 4.2 S/C

Having test driven a couple of RRS TDV6's, I don't think I will get great economy from them as you have to give them a bit of welly to get anywhere.

So, thinking of spending less money on a V8 RRS and the adding an LPG kit. Question is, which engine is better suited to having a conversion, or has the least problems when converted? Have many people done it?

Also, the LPG tank hangs really low at the rear, well below the spare wheel does - is there any alternative that would give more ground clearance offroad? Last thing I'd want to do is puncture the tank!!

Hi, whatever you do, do not convert a 4.2 sc. Scharger not designed to use gas. i ve heard some scary expensive stories about people using it on these engines. the other engine would be fine i believe. Sorry to sound gloomy. You cant beat the power delivery of a charger.

Thanks for the reply! What goes wrong when you convert the s/c engine to LPG? I'm sure a 4.4 V8 will be plenty powerful enough, of course, but a s/c would be something else!! - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

i think its about lubrication of the valves and the chargers cambers. they run dry and over a period of time these fail causing expensive rebuild. i'm sure someone out there could give you better advise. If your worried about fuel costs go for the 4.4. my sc gives about 15 mpg depending how i drive Very Happy but they are fun.

4.4 will be plenty quick enough I'm sure!

Have found lots of threads saying "don't do it, it's a disaster on either engine" but no threads about anyone who has actually experienced such a disaster.

I am happy to go with the 4.4 over the 4.2 s/c if it is better suited to the conversion, but want to make sure I am not facing an engine rebuild in 2 years time! - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

hello mike c
vertually all reputable gas converters will either, refuse point blank to do the conversion on the sc or will advise against and only do it if you sign a disclaimer. try giving a few a call.
If you want the full facts call JE Engineering, . Initially when i called them, a few years ago, they said they had done a conversion but it was knackering the engine and they were working on the fix. They now mod the cylinder head but it is very expensive. give them a call for datails on the Na V8.

Just buy a TDV8 and have 4.4 performance with nearly TDV6 economy. And if you want a bit more performance they map very well... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

So basically the message is if I want power and (some) economy, go for a diesel + remap rather than a petrol + LPG?

TDV8's start at around £23k for a decent one, whereas a TDV6 is around £18k - is the TDV8 worth an extra £5k? There's also the extra road tax, insurance and fuel costs so think I'd be better with a remapped TDV6 - finding a mint one for sensible money is proving difficult! - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

in short the tdv8 at that age is worth the money and will resale much easier when and if you decide to pass it on.

I'm looking at 3 TDV8's available to me at the moment from 18k-26k

Hi

Personally speaking I have owner 3 rrs and have had the lpg kit installed once purchased.

I have found that they are much quicker and fuel economic at the speed of a 4.4.

Would reccomend 4.4 v8 conversion and stay away from the 4.2.

My current rrs has an 85 litre tank underneath the car and is just about visible, the car runs great and costs only 61p a litre where I am.

LPG all the way if your wating that V8 Roar!

How many miles are you getting to the 85 ltr tank (-10% for expansion iirc)?

I used to get about 200 miles from my 4.4 v8 FFRR from a 95ltr tank (which took about 85ltrs to fill)

The 85 litre tank allows me to fill approx 77 litres which gives me 210 miles approx locally, on motorways driving at around 80 - 90mph gives me 240 miles.
