Two completely different cars I know but interested in hearing particularly frm people who own or have driven both.

Space isnt really an issue to me and Im just looking for a powerful luxurious cruiser which feels like an occasion everytime I drive it. Not looking for a pure sports car.

I understand this is an RR forum so views might be biased, but If space wasnt an issue for some owners here would you prefer the SL instead?

l've just gone from a SL55 AMG (had it 3 years) to a RRS 3.6 TDV8.

Obviously they are completely different so there is almost no way of comparing them but they both give a real sense of occasion when driving them. l'm surprised how much l like the RRS.

I have a really good bank manager and am lucky enough to have a 4.2SC and a SL55. As cycleSi says they are completely different cars, both excellent to drive.

My opinion might be biased as I really love the LR brand. The SL is a stunning car, but you are very limited with its use, personally if I had to choice one or the other it would definitely be the RR a better all round usable car and still very exciting.

Youve probably talked some sense into me. This car will be my only car so guess might be silly to go for the SL. However do really like the SL and will probably have to own one at some point. As soon as my current car is sold ill be looking for a 5.0 SC. Cant wait

Excellent choice I'm not that lucky as I only have a little old 4.2 I have driven the 5ltr and it is a beast you will not be disapointed.

Yes you must own one, but go for a 55 there is no better noise, I am sure the Germans made it sound like a Spitfire on purpose.

Good to know its powerful as Ill be coming from an Evo9 so will need something to still give me a rush, albeit not as manic as the Evo

You will get a rush from the SC, rest assured on that. it will also be a lot more comfortable.

Yes get a decent aftermarket exhaust on the SC and the job will be done. Good luck and post photo's

Of course l miss the speed of it. It was running 603 bhp & 624 lbft when l sold it so (despite its weight) it was fairly lively to say the least. The folding roof was epic too. However, l did have a lot of warranty work done on it by MB which was disappointing considering it was £117k new.

The bizarre thing though is the RRS is a totally different beast and seems to waft down the road on a wave of torque so the 'performance drop' doesn't feel that noticeable.

My advice is to buy BOTH !!!

CycleSi was the warranty work on the roof leaking by any chance??

Surprisingly not.

I had £11500 of warranty work done in 3 years:

Exhausts - both.
Fuel tank - replaced.
Front struts - replaced.
Various steering components replaced.
God knows what else !

Thank god for MB Tier 1 warranty.

I had one of the first SL55's back in 03...and all I can say ... it was a beast... lovely noise gr8 torque and like off a shovel off the line....
if it's got to be a 500 then the RRS has got to be very much in contention..... but if you really and I mean really don't need the space and practicality then purely on the convertible aspect.... which truly is a joy.... then its a close call with poss the SL nudging it...
You can barely fit a weekend bag in the SL with the roof down !!
Tough call... I'm fortunate enough to always have a 2 seater sports conv as well as a 4x4...

Just to confuse you even more..... you can always chip the RRS.... now that sounds like a lot of dangerous fun !!

I would love both but Ive moved to Malaysia for work and even an SL300 here retails at around £160k new and a Range Sport SC roughly £135k new with tax at over £2k a year. I will not be buying new thats for sure but used prices are still pretty high.
Panning to get a nice used example from the UK and have it shipped over, pay relevant taxes etc which should still work out cheaper.


Even tho I dont need the space (single no kids etc) it will be my only car (in addition to a scooter for putting around for short trips in bad traffic).

The torque of the Rangie sounds great. Currently have an evo9 and the turbo lag is annoying.
