Too good to be true ?

There is a RRS for sale on Ebay which is under 12 months old and the asking price is £18k It turns out that this is a right hand drive 4 litre petrol version that the US owner wants to sell in the UK, and they will pay the shipping cost. Goodness knows what the duty / VAT implications on import would be. All sounds far too good to be true to me. The following is the text of the email I got from the vendor.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in my car.
First of all, I want to tell you that the vehicle is in perfect
condition. The milage is accurate. It has no scratches, no damages, no hidden defects. Kept it in a warm garage. It comes with all the documents needed for registration, it has a clear title and it can be anytime registred into your name any time without a problem. Also, the car will be delivered from Los Angeles, USA and I will take care of all shipping and insurance charges.
I hate to sell it, but after long disscusions with my wife, we decided to
invest the total amount that we will abtain in our business. We own a ATV
shop here in Los Angeles and we need to make some important purchases for the summer season. Also because I'm spending most of my time here in USA I can't drive it because the car is right hand drive.
The price I hope to obtain for the car is 18.000 GBP (this price includes
shipping and insurance charges) and if you agree with this price we can
start the arrangements at this point.
The shipping will be made through International Cargo Lines and the car will be delivered at your shipping address in no more than 7-8 days.
Also I preffer a secure method of payment.
If you have further questions email me.
Looking forward to hear from you. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

I saw this too.

Sounds like you will just be waving goodbye to your £18k.

Probably like the old saying if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is Wink

I guess so, it simply doesn't seem to stack up and so there is no doubt a scam involved. Mind you £18,000 is around $31,000. Shipping would be a good $2,000 I guess (maybe Tim could give a more educated guess at that ?). So what would a right hand drive RRS sell for in the US in $'s ? I know that new they are about the same in $ as they are here in Pounds, so I imagine $29,000 is not such a stupidly low price for the vendor to be seeking. But then again, how or why he would ever have sourced a right hand drive V6 petrol in the US I have no notion. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Sounds like somebody is trying to get rich quickly. Shipping a car from LA takes about 30 days and costs about £1,500 including insurance etc.

And that’s included in the price…we should ask for the VIN number, that would stump him/her.

A friend of mine was gonna start up a business selling clothes and stuff so he got in touch with a guy in the US that he can import them through all sounded good and well. Well cut a far to long of a story sort the guy robed him of 5k in the end.

He found a forum all about this guy with other people from all over the world saying that they have been stung by this guy as well

I would raise a huge ? over the engine............. there is no such thing as a 4.0l RRS in right hand drive! There is a 4.0l LR3. I would imagine the only way to have got a RHD RRS into the USA would have been a private or diplomatic import. My next door neighbours emigrated to New Hampshire a couple of years back and took their Volvo V40 because it was only 8 months old when they went, with them but recently shipped it back here to sell it this year. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Have just read the ad again and see that he expects it will be at your shipping address within 7-8 days................... the only way it will get to the UK in that short a time is if it goes by 747, and then shipping costs would be somewhat more than £1500! Even the fastest containerships would take 6 days to get from LA to the Panama Canal............ then another 10 days to get to Southampton / Liverpool / Felixstowe /Sheerness/ Tilbury. Going the other way, via the Far East would take a month.

Definately a dodgy deal going on. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I once was offered an M3 coupe for £20k (about 3 years ago so that would have been a bargain price..) i posted about it on bm3w.co.uk and we had this Mr. 'helmut schneider' going for ages..

He claimed they had bought a UK RHD M3 and shipped it to Greece.. he had pics of it sitting on a lawn and even scanned me the V5 which showed the Greek address.. stumped us for a while.. and he actually expected me to wire him £20k through western union.. i emailed him that me and a few colleagues would fly out and come and get the car in person he made excuses then, and i then told him to shuv it where the sun doesn't shine.. or something along those lines..

The thread on Bm3w went on for some time, and numerous tales emerged of other performance cars being sold for far less the retail and ending being a scam..

Offer to fly out and view the car and tell them you will bring money with you.
or say you have a friend or relative in LA who has agreed to come view the car on you're behalf.. that will root out if they are legit or not..
if they are.. maybe things which seem too good to be true actually aren't..

If someone gives me a link to it I happen to know someone on the West Coast who wants a RRS but it's a bit out of his budget. He might be prepared to check him out. Cool 2002 Discovery Adventurer LE
