Privacy Glass

Now after having my white RRS TDV8 for a couple of weeks, I am thinking of having windows tinted, not sure to what level, what are the regulations for this, can anyone recommend a good company in North East. Very Happy 2008 BMW 635D sport (just gone)

The Rear windows/windscreen can be as dark as you like.

The front MUST allow 70% of light through - standard glass is around 18-22% tinted from factory

I'll get shot down for this but my opinion is get Pentagon autotints [google them all over the country] to tint the windows in a light smoke. Anything darker is a no no makes the look like a commercial vehicle.

Wait for the same old " oh you can see the orange elements on the rear window!!!!! Much better than having a bloody VAN LOOK.

I had after market tints on my last car, I wouldn't get them again, it was pitch black in the back!! As previously said, go for a more subtle tint in the back. On the other hand, The factory ones you wouldn't know they had been done, nice and light in there!

unless you have the rear reversing camera Very Happy

I'd also agree on the dark aftermarket kits making the rear of the car gloomy.

I also had an issue with the dealer arranging the aftermarket kit and only findng out in the winter that a couple of elements in the rear window demist were not operating. Although vehicle was under full LR warranty, LR would not entertain a warranty claim with an aftermarket tint fitted.

The law for expats here in UAE is we can only have tinted glass upto 30% but at least we can have every windows done on the car. I have a 3M 30% tint that also have UV blocker to reduce heat build up.
I see that in the UK the cars have all the glass tinted from the the middle pillar back wards. It look stupid OMHO.
Surely sometimes you also need to use the rear side windows for parking manouvers and that black tint doesn't help in any way then? I don't have a reversing camera on my RRS SC so have to rely on teh parking sensors....when they are working Whistle

Can you have a lesser tint fitted to glass on the front windows or should they remain stock as per the factory?

Curious........ Ra-Ro Sport Super Dooper Charged.

The dark factory tints let loads of light in despite looking dark on the outside , so no problem for manoeuvring.
You can tint the fronts but only a light tint up to a certain percentage, not sure what it is , something like 20-25 percent. I think the standard Glass is something like 10% anyway.

I had my D3 tinted with limo tints, was very dark inside. But rear passengers loved it as no one could see them in the back and it kept the car quite cool in the summer.

I am thinking of having my sport done as well, but will only go with a lighter grade tint this time

I can understand the 'Privacy Glass' for VIP's etc who don't want photographers and so forth shooting cameras in their face....but why do people have privacy glass in the back of the car when they are the person driving in the front with no tint what so ever?

The Police don't allow full tint here on expats cars so they can clearly see all occupants of the vehicle. They carry desitometers around with them so anyone caught driving with more than 30% tint has to remove it on the spot and face a fine.
Why is it not allowed to have darkened front windows in UK?

I had full privacy glass due to the fact I carry a lot of expensive photography kit in the back, often can't get it all in the boot and I don't want some pond life scumbag pile of monkey vomit seeing it and breaking in to pinch it.

Streaky,
If they allowed too dark a tint on the front, then incidences of idiots at night pulling out of a junction and into the path of a bike/motorcycle etc would shoot through the roof!
