RRS All Weather Tyre

Hi. I would be grateful for some advice to stop me wasting even more time researching ..

I am currently running continentals on 20 inch stormers [275/40/20s] and the recent snow has been a bit of a nightmare given my daily driving is like driving across the set of Heartbeat.

So, I am looking to take my side runners off and set the car up so it works effectively through the winter months with an all weather tyre.

Can anyone please recommend the appropriate tyre that can handle most that the road throws at it and also makes the car more effective off it? I don't want to get it into mud or snow tyres and I appreciate it is a compromise. I also want to give the car a more rugged look as well.

I will change the wheels as well if necessary but ideally would prefer to keep the 20s. Also, if I do change the wheels, can I change the width of the tyre to a 45 without any implication?

I have been looking at The Nitto Terra Grapplers [but don't think you can get in the UK?] and the Cooper Zeons .. ??

All assistance, gratefully received.

Thanks

Have a word with sponsors AJS4x4 Sponsors Page You will be very limited for choice on 20's and the smallest wheel your RRS can take is the 19 inch. (presuming you have Brembo's) 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

Over on the disco3 site, member ronp has been running a D3 on Zeon LTZ with 20" Stormers for a year now (original post). Since he hardly ever fails to mention them when the opportunity arises, I take it that he is pleased with them and will probably answer any Qs you may have on them.

IIRC Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow are now available in 20", I run on the 19's though because that was all I could get 2 years ago. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

one of the disco3 members (Ronp) has 20" Cooper Zeon LTZ (?) which is a road going off road wheel with very little aditional noise

ideal if your off roading and using the same wheels for work/commuting etc

Thanks for all your replies.

I spoke with Andy at AJS and he does rate the Vredesteins, so it is between these and the Coopers. Both get pretty good reviews as a more usable tyre if you get about a bit but without going too wild and still need the road performance. It's a difficult one to call but the Coopers are slightly cheaper.

I need to understand the implication of going with a 45 depth rather than the recommended 40 but I will start a new topic .. after I have had chance to make sure it hasn't been covered on the forum before; I'd be surprised if it hasn't.

Cheers, All.

Mate, Andy certainly has not recommended 275/45/20 but strictly advised you to stick to 275/40/20, am I mistaken?
I also spoke to cooper on this topic and they also do not recommend the 45 tyre simply because it is not a manufacturer recommended dimension and thus it make cause false readings (speedo or on board compute). Cooper however is about to launch a tyre in 275/40/20 dimension, which unfortunately will have a slightly less aggressive look.

Though, there are forum members who run 275/45/20 and they do not report any problems at all only a significant improvement in the ride quality.

Now, my deduction would be following: if you take the GY MTR tyre, which is the only off-road tyre accepted by LR, its dimension 255/55/19. Comparing this dimension to a 275/45/20 gives you very similar results (use miata.net)
But there certainly must be a reason why LR does not fit dimension to RRS. However to contradict to what I have just said, if you look at spy shots of MY10 RRS, the car was certainly on 275/45/20 tyres.

To summarise, I wish you bought the coopers and report positive experience so that I can go ahead and buy a set myself Whistle

Hope this helps...

Coko

the Gdyr MTR is not a standard size fitted to the Sport in the 19 inch size it is an oversize.

Standard fit is 255x50x19 so should really use this as refeerence point when looking to go oversize

the size is however standard on Disco 3!!

Also the speed rating on this tyre is not the right rating for the RRS but is OK with Disco's (yep I know Landrover fit it)

Many have fitted and run with them no problems, but might have insurance implications if speed rarings are not right.

running an oversize tyre does not appear to be problem on RRS 1step up def OK, but will put the speedo slightly out. However I have seen on the Nav screen setup you can alter the tyres that are fitted to it to adjust for this.

Landrover do not recomend anything non standard to protect its corperate arse Shocked

lespes,
I understand the issue with speed ratings but can not get my head around the oversized tyres. Why do specialised tyre retailers recommend fitting 255/55/19 tyres for off-roading but do not recommend 275/45/20s for standard use? Rolling Eyes

Any way, I have never realised that you can set up what tyres you have fitted. I am going to check that out right now Whistle

been running wintrac 4 xtremes for past month now (275/40/20), kindly recommended and supplied by site sponsor andy at AJS4X4. they have been superb in current weather conditions, and i'm planning to run them all year. so far would definitely recommend them.

symsey i can not agree more with you that wintrac is very good tyre but this is winter tyre and in the warm summer month (if you can called that warm what we get here in the UK) is likely to wear quickly Whistle
So really you would be best of with a second set of summer tyres Thumbs Up

Coko - Andy did not recommend 45s. Apologies for the confusion.

I am just trying to get my head around whether to fit all terrains on my existing wheels or whether I should put them on new ones. I saw a wheel and tyre package that had a 45 set up and I'm trying to get to the bottom of whether it is a no-no or not.

mate, as far as I am aware set of 45s should not harm the car in any respect. as other forum members report it does however improve the ride quality significantly...
