Labour Rates...

Wanted to get side steps and mud flaps fitted prior to the collection of my new Sport. However I have refused to accept my dealers labour charges at a whopping £120/hr! This is not a London dealer. Anyone beat that? 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

Christ alive - that's crazy! I could understand if we were talking about something with technical difficulty. I was looking to get these addded to mine also - there's a good independant near me, so I think I will check with them also.

Just a thought, but how does everyone feel about this? You spend £50K+ on a new car, and they charge you for bolting a couple of extras onto it - leaves a sour taste to me, and is not exactly the best way of offering customer satisfaction!

Bradders.

£120 is the RRS standard hourly rate for most LR dealers. Funnily enough it's slightly less for a Discovery and slightly more for a FFRR. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Trouble is Bradders the service centre is a seperate business. My sales guy can't get them to move an inch, going as far as saying the shop us so busy at the moment, they aren't interested in doing the work in the first place, let alone at a discounted rate.

It sums up UK Plc. in general. 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

If you are looking for cheaper rates there are some approve LR service centres that charge a lot less than main LR dealerships but you are unlikely to get a loan car and if you do it almost certainly will not be a RRS or LR. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I don't think it can be as I have a quote from another dealer for nearly half that cost. VA don't you think it expensive, I know lawyers on less hourly rates. Heck it's more than mine & I got skills! 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

Gazzer - £120 is the recommended standard hourly rate and if a garage wants to charge less it's up to them. Yes I do think it's expensive but there are enough people out there who pay it simply because they think they have to. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Know what you mean Gazzer. It does pretty much sum things up. How about buying the steps and flaps, and taking them round to any local indy for bolting on?

VA - hear what you are saying - and under normal circumstances, I could understand (although why the same man is allowed to be costed at different rates depending on the assumed depth of the customer's pocket's is another matter). My issue is more the technicality of the job in hand - hardly rocket science, is it. To be honest, it's got me thinking whether there is any scope in opening a small shed next to a main dealer offering non-vital mech work.

Had an issue yesterday that shows a similar theme. Need to put my stormers back on the HST before I p/x it. The aftermarket Overfinch reps it is running on, it appears, have different nuts. So, I need a full set - the chap who sold me the car a few months ago cannot find the originals! Land Rover price, £128+VAT for a full set, 16 std nuts and a 4 set of locking nuts. Price from an independant - £100 all in, VAT included. No work involved - parts coming from the same central store - £50 difference in price. UK Plc at it's finest!

It's up to you guys and because of the cost you will find people have set up their own businesses offering a cheaper service. Have a look at our sponsors page Sponsors Page There is a chap called 10forcash and he is a mobile LR tech who will do almost anything your car needs and is cheaper than a LR service centre. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Agree that the labour rate does not reflect the level of skill the rate reflects. In the service centre the chaps are called 'Technicians' not mechanics, as nothing gets fixed anymore, just components get replaced until it all works properly again. (must cost LR a fortune) The hourly rate is just a stream of revenue for the dealer.

Yes. It can be a good thing to have fixed times for vArious jobs. Guess thus is one way LR can control warranty work. My mate had big lights fitted to his D3 spposed to be a 3hr job, took dealer all day instead but only got charge the fixed fee. Ouch! 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

Like it or not, it's the rate they charge... not sure we should be getting all hot under the collar about it Very Happy

For accessory fitting, it makes much more sense to go to an indy Thumbs Up

That is ridiculous as you say. I would tell them that I will pick the car up when its ready and fitted with the accessories you ordered for the specified and agreed amount.

You are paying for the car with the accessories specified, how they get put on is not your concern. Give the problem back to the dealer...... Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
