Ok ok ok, must be into the 100's of threads about this so please re-direct or at least be honest and tell me to push off. Very brief background. I'm 40, single (don't ask), currently drive a Ford Focus ST (hold back the laughter, a fabulous car for what it is) but I fancy something that when I get in it, makes me feel king of the World. Admired the Sports and always fancied one.

So, price range, up to £25K, want petrol, leather, sat nav, and um, that's about it really. Oh, black, must be black. I only do, about £5K miles per year so not really worried about fuel, it's going to be a daily drive.

Moving on, what I think I'm trying to ask is, um, is it any good? Clarkson seems to think so, other owners seems to think so, it's just friends who say "Simon, why on earth would you want something so big when you don't really need it?".

People, please, any chance you could post some sort of 'footprint' comparison with other motors that I can go to them and say "well, actually, it's no bigger than a new mondeo"?

I'm new, it's the day before Bank Holiday, so, gentle, please.

You are of course asking a partisan crowd the eternal question. I won't go over the ground that has already been covered here thousands of times (which I think you knew), but looking at your requirements you'll be able to easily get yourself into a 3yr old Supercharged model for that money.

Just make sure it's well serviced, get the VIN of any you're seriously considering and ring the service dept of any LR main dealer. They should be able to tell you what work's been done on it and verify servicing etc.

There's an unresolved repeating issue on some cars with the Dynamic Response (as all SCs have) which leads to an unpleasant knocking in the hydraulics. Easy enough to test for on a test drive but unfortunately there has been no permanent fix for it. It seems to happen on most cars equipped with DR, but not all as a rule.

Given the MY10 car specs were released a couple of days ago and come with a completely new suspension and handling system, it's not likely that this fault will ever be resolved.

I would also consider a FFRR SC they are good value now, put on an OF kit and the job is done. LR are not really that bad, I have had 7 and they have all had annoying problems but nothing major to cause you any serious problems.

Be careful though once your hooked your hooked.

do it. i had a focus st3 for 18months as a stop gap when i sold my m3 and before i bought my sport. ive never regreted making the switch to 4x4, best thing ive owned. handling and performance wise, once your used to it you will find yourself not far behind the hot hatch brigade, and you definately get a feeling like no other motor gives you when you own one of these. get it bought!!!!!!

I bought my RRS just after my divorce - felt King of the Hill every time I drove it.

I've recently traded mine in and it's for sale on Pistonheads at Automarques. It ticks all your boxes, black, petrol, under 25k, sat nav and all the other goodies. It's not a Supercharged but it is HSE spec. The 4.4 is an excellent engine and the performance is not far short of the S/C (despite what everyone on here says). Economy is a little better than the S/C. Just an idea for you. I had it for 3 years, 24k miles and was always really reliable for me. No nasty suspension knocking either!!!
