Tell me about tow bars please

Hi

What are my options about fitting a tow bar to a RRS please?

Of course I can go to my dealer and pay ££££ - which is fine Smile

And naturally I can go to Kwikfit too - which may be fine lol

And I can also do it myself - which wont be fine....

But seriously whats a man to do for the best cost effective result?

Im reasonably handy and not shy of a bit of graft
Especially if it saves me some cash

Can I buy the bits from LR?
Or even from an independent source?
Are they easy to fit at home?
Is the wiring located in a kind place and is it easy to dip into it for the electrics?
Have I forgotten anything else?

But basically what Im asking is would you get your dealer, the local towbar shop or your good self to fit a tow bar?
And if the answers DIY where would you get the parts from?

Cheers

Australia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Chawton White

In Australia it was $500 to have it fitted at the factory, or $2k at the dealer... They claim it is a lot of work to fit, and thus is easier and cheaper whilst the car is still being assembled.. If you need one I would look for a RRS that already has it as I doubt t will add any premium to the price you are paying for the car!

If you mean only the towbar then its a very easy job.
If you need the electrics too then you had better check if your vehicle is prepped with the right sockets.

By the way, which RRS do you own? Malaysia Boleh!

The best place to buy everything you will need for a DIY job is Ebay. Here is the complete kit:

Range Rover Sport Tow Bar & Electrics

The detachable towbar is the easiest route for the enthusiastic DIY er. But be warned if you are installing the plug in type electrical harness you will have to remove the rear bumper to make the connections. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

As described earlier, the cheapest route is eBay...... do a search for Range Rover sport towbar or even Disco 3 which is identical. Keeping an eye on the listings will get you one for £150.
The RRS has a nice wiring loom that looks simple to fit (well the instructions included certainly make it look simple) they retail at Stratstones Nottm for just under £100, you should pick them up on eBay from anywhere up to that price, starting at about £70.
I will be fitting my electrics in the next couple of weeks so will let you know how easy it is but like I said the instruction make it look clear and easy....certainly no mention of removing the rear bumper.
The loom is just a plug and fit affair and even includes a replacement loom if your car has reversing sensors.

My understanding about a trip to the stealers once you have fitted the loom is that the fog lights are de-activated on the car when a trailer is fitted to reduce glare.

Again, will let you know if this is the case AND if I have to visit Stratstones what they charge me.
I am popping there in about an hour so I could enquire what they charge for the loom and a fitting price if you wish.

Hope this helps

If you're a bit handy then don't bother with getting a dealer to fit.
It really is a simple job. A bit tight at times because you have to crawl around under the back of the car to reach behind the bumper but by no means technical. I did mine in about 45 mins. Only tools I required were a couple of screwdrivers to remove my lamp guards (to remove both tail light cluster) and a knife. You have to take most of the interior trim out in the boot, but nothing too difficult.

my wiring kit cost £75 from fleabay and comes with instructions. Point to note on the instructions though is that they cover the Disco3 and the RR Sport but the picture on them shows a FFRR (!). Relatively easy to follow instructions and the wiring kit is a very simple plug in job behind the boot trim on the LHS.

Personally, having done mine, I'm glad I didn't have the expense of using a stealer. Mind you, I still haven't got round to buying the towbar part yet!

Hope this helps.

If you've spent so much on a Sport the why does it matter so much to try and save a few quid here and there on a tow bar?

Just buy a proper LR one either from a dealer or eBay and pay someone to fit it. End of. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Popped into Strantstones today while picking up my colour coded door handles.

They charge £175 to fit the electrics.........I guess it's down to choice but I'm no big fan on paying a fair amount of cash to someone else for something I am happy to do myself.
The price of the car has nothing to do with it.

Hey why not go the whole hog and hire someone to drive you around all the time (I'm sure Kam could give you a quote) well you have spent all that money on the car!!!!!!!!!!! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
