Singapore 2007 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Zermatt Silver
Colour code bumpers and side moldings

Hi all,

First off let me say what a pleasure its been to visit this site over the last couple of weeks. You all (ok most of you!) offer a wealth of info and advice to us newbies.

I just got my Zermatt Silver 4.4 HSE this Tuesday! Sheer joy! So far no problems at all and I managed to sync my Nokia 6110 Navigator through bluetooth with absolutely no problems.

I'm seriously considering colour coding my front and rear bumbers and side-moldings (they are currently black). I assume they are made of some sort of plastic - will they be able to hold a couple of coats of paint or is the paint likely to peel off or chip over a period of time?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

If it's done badly, they will chip and flake... but you might want to consider how much to colour code, especially as you have a silver car. The RRS can't take too much colour coding in my opinion, especially in silver.

shmoogle - personally I don't like the american-style 'pimped' version of the RRS but I figure just the lower section of the bumpers in silver would be nice.

When you say 'done badly' what should I look out for? Does the plastic need to be prepped in some way before painting?

Overdoing it would mean doing the pillars which ruins the 'floating roof' effect of the vehicle. My car is black and I have had the lower parts don, pics in my gallery.

The standard plastic has 'dimples' which dont hold paint too well so prepping would be de-texturing the plastic. Any reputable body shop should be able to do it. 2006 '56 RRS TDV6 HSE, Java Black, Alpaca Interior, PTI, Sidesteps, 22" Stormers wrapped in 285/35/22 Toyo Proxes, Java Framed SC Grille, Java/Zambezi Side Vents, Matt Black LR3 Door Handles, Matt Black Lower Tailgate Trim, Colour coded lower body trims, Semi Smoked Taillights, Chrome Mirrors and Fog Light Bezels, Reflex Exhaust Back, Full Pentagon AutoGlass Privacy, Tasmod Sills, Clear Side Repeaters, pics in gallery!

I agree on both points... Thumbs Up

Guntersg, if you can have someone recommend you a local bodyshop where someone's had decent work done before they will be able to do it for you. Taking it to the dealer bodyshop is also an option, but they'll charge you stupid money for it.

There is a silver RRS close to me in Kent that is fully colour coded and it just doesnt look right. It looks as though its had a total respray like an old model thats been referbished.
Only my opinion though and have to say I would like my bottoms done but I am Java so a little different.

DDX yours does look good.
Can you remember what sort of cost it was to do the bottom skirt in black?

John, I had front and back lower sills done, and it came to a little over £300 - together with my front grill, door handles and mirrors and pillars too - all in all about £800. When I looked at getting a new car, dealer was quoting about £1000 for a full colour code

John, appreciate the opinion. I like the 'understated' look but thought perhaps the lower parts of the bumper and side mouldings (at the bottom of the doors) might perhaps give it a nicer all-round look. When you say the one in Kent is fully colour coded, what exactly has been painted?

I saw a white RRS on the A3 yesterday with colour coded lower trim and black wheels - looked very nice! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

Nick since your localish, where did you get the work done? Im finding it hard to trust anybody to do a good job and not keep the car for aaages.

Hi guntersg
Front and rear under bumper trims and bottom of all door sills. I looked again this afternoon and cant quiet make my mind up.
It almost looks as though its been resprayed all over with a non LR silver but I dont think it has. It just looks wrong somehow.
