Nick - this is a private client - I'm onsite at this new build project so unfortunately no IT dept - in fact I have become his IT dept today Laughing

I'm resisting the temptation to keep telling him he should have backed it all up in case I lose the contract Laughing

Kaine, There is a facility in windows to recover previous versions of files under these circumstances. It's called "Shadow Copy Client". The only problem is, it is not activated by default but has to be configured. In the slim hope that your client may have this feature enabled try placing the mouse cursor over the file in question, right click once and look down the menu that appears. If the Shadow copy is enabled then one of the options available will be "Previous Versions" which you can then select from to recover the file. If he doesn't have "Shadow Copy" enabled then I'm afraid he's stuffed. Advise him to buy a cheap backup solution. Freecom do one for about £60 that is simply an external Hard Drive bundled with NTI backup software and works very well for Single users/small companies. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Thanks mate - he's now left to go get a back up drive and has arranged for some two of his staff to work over the weekend to remake the documents

Yep, They always learn after the fact! People don't seem to value their data until they lose it then they panic!!

Yep It's available in XP. Just search for it using google and you'll find loads of help sites that talk you through activating it. Remember - GOOGLE is your friend Thumbs Up 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Kaine,

All is not lost. There are 2 things to try, one or the other should work. Not sure if you are using Office 2003 or 2007, either way, it works basically on the same principal.

Firstly. In Word, there are many options, of which many are switched on by default. Autosave being one of them.

Look here for the doc name:

C:\Users\Will\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\

Check this location 1st.

If that fails, the 2nd option is to look in the "temp" directory: C:\WINDOWS\Temp

If that fails, I can provide a Freeware recovery piece of software, but that will only work if the sector on the disk has not been re-written too. If that has happened, you are 100% snookered - recovery specialist or not. Big Cry [/img] L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!

Hi Will,

Thanks for your post, but its too late. The problem was a clients problem on Friday and as we were unable to resolve it then so the file is being recreated from scratch to his frustration.

Thanks

Kaine

Kaine Contrary to comments, Excel files are pretty easy to recover, at low cost (unless some erasing 37-pass overwrite has been used)

Check out http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/r...-files.htm or

http://www.whitecanyon.com/recover-deleted...-files.php

This, or similar, is what the data recovery people will use, at greater expense! Confused
